Today we’d like to introduce you to Euri Yoo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Twelve years ago, I graduated from college with a degree in accounting and did the predictable – I got a job at an accounting firm. It may sound boring but I loved it! I loved the long hours, the satisfaction of preparing a complicated tax return, the appreciation from clients when I could solve their tax issues. It sounds so nerdy, but it was very satisfying work made all the better by having a great boss/mentor and co-workers who became friends.
After ten years at the firm, my priorities began to shift. I was in my 30’s, married and expecting my first child. My husband and I had a tough time getting pregnant. It was a dark time in our lives. So this pregnancy was a very pleasant surprise after several failed treatments and some heartbreaking setbacks. I had every intention of returning to work after my son was born, but everything changed once I held him in my arms.
Once I decided I wasn’t going back to work full-time, I knew I had to do something to earn some income and keep my knowledge up-to-date. My husband, ever the entrepreneur, encouraged me to start my own CPA practice. I’m introverted, risk-averse, and hate change so it didn’t sound very appealing to me. But I bought a domain name, just for kicks. I started working on the website, created a Facebook business page, put the word out to friends and people actually started to hire me! I was surprised/excited/scared with each new client. I started in January 2017 and so far, have doubled what I expected to earn this year. To be fair, being the conservative accountant that I am, I had very low expectations. But I’m still pretty proud of what I accomplished this year.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Business has been good and I’ve been busier than I expected, so in that sense things have been pretty smooth. I truly didn’t expect to be so busy so I was quite overwhelmed with work at times, but I guess that’s a good problem to have. Let me tell you, it’s a lot more satisfying working until 2AM for yourself than it is for someone else!
I have wondered if I made the right decision to start this business and stay home with my son. It’s been a financial burden, but at the same time I wouldn’t trade the time I’ve had with my son. And if I continue to grow the business, my earning potential is unlimited, right? I’m not a risk taker by any means, but I’m lucky to have a supportive husband and supportive friends to encourage me and pick me up whenever I’m feeling discouraged.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed to practice in California. I have over twelve years’ experience in preparing tax returns for business and individuals. I don’t have a specialty as I have experience in everything from small businesses to non-profit organizations to large corporations, all of which I find interesting for different reasons. These days, I’ve enjoyed working with a lot of young professionals and small businesses. I want my clients to see me as a year-round trusted advisor. I encourage clients to contact me throughout the year if they have any tax or financial questions. I want to have a relationship with my clients that goes beyond just April 15th.
I also provide bookkeeping, tax planning, consulting, and audit representation services.
