Rising Stars: Meet YAARROHS

Today we’d like to introduce you to YAARROHS.

Hi YAARROHS, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The birth of YAARROHS was in 2013, and I was on a mission to channel my passion for singing and performing into something tangible that would allow me to connect with the world in a meaningful way. Artists like The Knife, Grimes, and Fever Ray were my muses, their unique styles were a source of inspiration for me as I began to craft my own sound.

Growing up in an inner-city Korean American family, music had always been a constant in my life. We had a karaoke machine at home, and I would often find myself singing in front of my aunts, uncles, and grandparents at family gatherings. Despite the lack of opportunities in my community, I was always eager to participate in activities involving singing, dancing, or performing.

Now, my goals and aspirations have evolved. I want to use my platform to uplift marginalized communities and support the voices of activists. I want to collaborate with as many women, women of color, and nonbinary people as possible, to show young Asian girls that there is a place for them in music and electronic music.

In 2014, I released my first collection of songs under Glass Air Records. I’m excited to continue pushing my own boundaries and using my platform to make a difference in the lives of others.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My mother’s passing was a pivotal moment in my life. Before her death, I had been consumed by the pursuit of fame and success, wanting to become the first Asian American woman to win a Grammy and be signed to a major label. But in the wake of her passing, I realized that all of that was nothing compared to the love and connection I share with my loved ones.

I made the difficult decision to leave behind LA and ventured out into the wilderness. There, in an industrial space nestled in the heart of the woods, I lived in 1200 square feet of raw, concrete floors with no shower or kitchen that would serve as my blank canvas. I set out to create with nothing more than a few basic tools and my own imagination. I explored every medium imaginable – painting, drawing, sewing, installations, poetry, photography – and in doing so, discovered a deeper understanding of myself and my art.

I released my music independently, without the constraints of a label, and in that freedom, I found a new sense of purpose. I was no longer creating for the sake of external validation but, instead, from a place of authenticity and vulnerability. It was a difficult and painful journey, but it ultimately led me to live a more fully-expressed, creative life. And now, as I step into this new era of my career, I am grateful for the experience and the ability to continue to grow and evolve as an artist.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a multi-talented artist, I have always had a passion for creation. Whether as a songwriter, producer, performer, or art director, I have dedicated my life to exploring the depths of my imagination and expressing myself through a wide range of mediums.

My upcoming project is my first full-length record. Set to release this summer under Secular Sabbath Records, this collection of songs represents the culmination of years of hard work, experimentation, and self-discovery. It is the most exciting, life-saving, and inspiring project I have ever had the privilege of working on, and I am beyond eager to share it with the world.

What are your plans for the future?
My new music video and single, “Selfish,” is set to premiere on February 24th. It tells a story that is both raw and relatable, one that I believe will resonate with my generation and more.

“Selfish” is a song about the all-consuming cycle of love and addiction. It delves into the complexities of staying in a toxic relationship, despite knowing it’s bad for you. The lyrics paint a picture of a relationship marked by intoxication, fights, and makeup, all in the pursuit of that one elusive thing that keeps drawing you back in, again and again. It’s a story of loving someone you know you shouldn’t, of staying in a situation you know you should leave, but the allure of passion, sex, and love is too strong to resist.

This song and video are more than just a collection of words and images, it is a reflection of the struggles we all face in our relationships, and it’s an anthem for those who have ever felt trapped in a cycle of love and addiction.
