Today we’d like to introduce you to Jody Sterling.
Hi Jody, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a young girl in elementary, I always knew I would have a career in the beauty industry. In high school, I took classes after school for cosmetology and at 20 became a cosmetologist. I also work at a fashion stylist 1994-1997. Fast forward I am a Hairstylist of 34 years and salon owner of 16. I am also the first U.S patent holder of the innovative product Sterling Dryer and Dry Assist both are hair extension dryers that cut drying time down by 50% or more. My greatest accomplishment to date is my son Tyller who is 31yrs of age.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being a single mother and running now two businesses is challenging. Finding your tribe and connecting with like-minded people can be somewhat challenging. I would say fundraising for my products has been my biggest challenge black female founders received less than 1% in funding.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sterling Hair Solutions is a hardware technology company that creates products to assist the hair extension industry with their everyday task of drying commercial hair extension in a shorter time. Which in return generates more income for the stylist and salon owners. We are in the prototype and beta testing process at this time and it is going quite well. The hair extension is a 6 billion industry and we are looking forward to continue to invent products that help the industry professional to work smarter not harder. Sterling Dryer is a stand-alone dryer which allows the consumer to place their wet extension hair onto multiple racks and dry the hair evenly and in half the time. Our second product is Dry Assist which is another dryer used when the hair extensions are attached to the client’s natural hair and needs drying. This dryer also cuts drying time in half and helps to cut out mold and mildew which can occur when hair is left wet. Sterling Dryer is a U.S patent product as of 2017 and Dry Assist patented in 2022.
How do you think about luck?
Good luck by believing in what I have created for myself, family and my industry. By staying focused it has been rewarding. Bad luck not listening to my intuition and trying to bring everyone along for the journey of success realizing everyone doesn’t want to work hard and just looking to ride on your coattail. Your tribe is very crucial in your personal and business life.
