Meet Shayzon Prince

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayzon Prince.

Hi Shayzon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m SHAYZON also known as The Fashion Mixologist. Fashion Designer & Sewist, Southern California Realtor, Style Expert, Podcast Host of The Skinni w/Shayzon, On-Air Contributor and Ethical Fashion Devotee.

I’m a wife and proud momma to my son and daughter. These roles have been the most profound, rewarding and motivating.

I was born on the beautiful island of Jamaica and later migrated with my family to the US. I am a huge fashion lover! Not only for the fashion on the racks, but since my early childhood days in Jamaica, I have always been in love with the process, construction and making of a garment, from concept to creation. I wanted to become a fashion designer, but life took me down another successful career path in media, both behind the scenes as a celebrity makeup artist and style expert and in front of the camera as a TV personality. As fulfilling as that was, the deep love and desire for designing and creating garments never went away. Years passed by and my responsibilities as a business owner, wife, and mother took center stage in my life. I felt my dream of one day becoming a designer drifting away.

Three and a half years ago after relocating to LA with my husband and amazing children, I finally acknowledged that desire in a more present way and gave myself permission to pursue my dream. With life’s happenings and responsibilities, I wouldn’t have been able to pause and acquire a degree in a traditional manner, so I decided to teach myself to design and sew. Regardless of how much later it was in life that I would be getting started, and despite what others may have thought about my new endeavor. I got passed the intimidation that I carried with me for sewing day by day, with every project, with every challenge and with every success! Bringing my designs to life has been and continues to be an absolutely remarkable experience and accomplishment.

My ultimate mission as The Fashion Mixologist is to show others how to celebrate life through fashion while maximizing style and minimizing waste. Seamlessly incorporating handmade, thrift, resale and vintage into our lives is attainable and incredibly fulfilling. You don’t have to compromise personal style or break the bank to be impactful and FAB-TASTIC.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth, but the journey and growth has been rewarding. I personally believe in taking the time to educate ourselves in areas that we aren’t confident in or knowledgeable of, especially in business and our craft of choice.

That being said, as companies and shows began reaching out to me, I quickly realized that the inner workings of the business side of fashion is an area that I also needed to become knowledgeable of if I wanted to successfully go beyond my sketches and sewing table. I’m actively and excitedly in the process of acquiring that knowledge.

It has been exciting to know that my work over the past few years has now opened up the interest of others and the possibilities to expand into the fashion world. Approaching this in an ethical way in production is very important for me. The challenge as an independent designer has been the cost of entry into the industry for manufacturing, production and also with finding companies that align with areas that I value very much.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a SoCal Realtor and an independent Fashion Designer. I’m primarily known for fashion and my love for thrift, vintage, upcycling and my Me Made creations. My goal is to also become successful and well known for the passion and joy I have for helping others in the real estate world as well.

I’m most proud of the decision I made to step away from my career a bit over a few years ago to be a stay-at-home mom during the very pivotal middle and high-school years in my children’s lives. I’m also proud that I gave myself the permission to go against the grain and to have now started over in two completely new career fields.

What sets me apart from others is me being me. We’re all unique people and standing proudly in that truth is our superpower. I’m no better than or more capable than anyone else, but my love for life and the beauty and inspiration that it surrounds us with every day is a gift I consciously acknowledge and hold dear to me every single day.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along the way is to first give ourselves grace and permission to fail.

Though our path in life may not be the “traditional” or most common, doesn’t mean our accomplishments or arrival at our destination in any less valid or valuable. It’s never too late to go after our desires and dreams, no matter the outcome and no matter what anyone else around us may think or say.
