Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Jin, a rising digital media entrepreneur. We’re always thrilled to see independent, non-corporate media thriving and encourage you to check out their publications.
Hi Justin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I’ve always loved the concept of entrepreneurship. I wanted to bring things to life, and the COVID-19 quarantine period, oddly, gave me that chance. Behind the Zoom meetings with my 8th-grade teacher, I spent hours playing Minecraft thanks to the extra time I had being confined in my bedroom.
At this point, like many preteens, I decided to start my flagship YouTube Channel “50mMidas” with tutorials recorded on my school laptop.
For the first few months, competing against the large creators with dozens of editors tweaking every graphic proved challenging: by my birthday I had reached only 200 subscribers.
It was on Halloween night, while my parents were out on a weekly grocery run, that I uploaded my first video taking after internet trends. The results were drastic: I achieved a cumulative 100,000 views overnight.
Throughout the following months, I recorded footage during break times in school and uploaded them daily. I began racking in thousands of dollars every week, granting me the reach and opportunity to start other projects like fundraisers and a recently-launched news website called The Vach.
Now, with a team of teenagers and young adults, we’ve grown communities of thousands and reached the eyes of millions.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a bit of a bumpy road. Balancing the workload, I dedicate to 50mMidas, school work, health, and other projects required extensive time management skills. Burnouts have happened, and sleep schedules have twisted, but I’m certain these experiences will be helpful in the future and maybe even give me some leeway in the College Tripartite Triangle next year.
We’ve been impressed with 50mMidas, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
50mMidas is a Canadian digital media company that owns a number of subsidiarity organizations including 50mMidas, an entertainment YouTube channel, The Vach, an internet news and opinion website, the Box of Color Initiative, a video media foundation donating art supplies to children in need, the Niger Delta Poverty Project, a non-profit cooperative news outlet for the Niger Delta region, among others.
50mMidas is notable for being 100% powered by teenagers and young adults, allowing the company to relate with its users.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
When I was 11, we were instructed to pitch a business in front of our grade to the teachers. Picture Shark Tank.
I remember being overly excited, taking over our group, and disregarding my peers’ opinions of my Groupon-like idea. Our plan ended up being dysfunctional, and I froze onstage. We lost, and I ended up crying when I got home.
This was my first experience in business, and my most important one: others’ opinions matter.
