Conversations with Laura Baggett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Baggett.

Hi Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started acting in New York City, I wrote a lot of Solo shows and did improv through the Peoples Improv Theatre. After booking some commercial work, I decided to move to Los Angeles. I have been here for over 10 years and I love the west coast. I lived on the west side for many years but once I found West Adams, I really liked the vibe and diversity. It felt a bit more like New York. I love the new cafes and restaurants that have opened up. As far as acting I have taken many breaks… I taught yoga for years, I was a private chef for a minute, I love to cook. I think as an artist, it is important to stay open to learning because it helps to add depth and understanding to roles. Whenever I stop having fun auditioning, I try to find a way to shake things up and bring more of myself to my work. This year I have shot 3 films with female directors and it is so exciting to see the stories being told and to work with new talented artists. It’s a very exciting time I think because we have so many platforms to tell stories. As much as I appreciate the commercial work I get, it’s doing an independent film that really brings me joy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Success has not been linear for me. I have had years where I didn’t work. Looking back I see that I was going through a period of growth. But when I was in it, it was hard to recognize. Loss of family members and growing out of old identities is extremely hard but getting the support I needed, finding community and being gentle with the process is what got me through. I still practice yoga and meditation daily. I need it to stay grounded and connected to spirit. For a long time, I doubted my talents and abilities and let others dictate whether or not I was “worthy”. When I started understanding that I have something to bring to the table and that I was enough, was when I started booking.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love comedy, and working with funny people is a dream. I love to play. I have also gotten more interested in Drama. It is really fun to work out a scene and get to the root of what is going on, especially with drama, suddenly I am saying my lines and tears are rolling down my face! It’s so wonderful to connect in a deep way when the script is great and everyone on set is tuned in..it can be magical. I did an American Home Shield commercial that was comedy and would literally get stopped in the grocery store by people saying how much they loved it. It was a great reminder of how much joy my work could bring to people..and it was just a commercial! I used to be called “too sensitive” and be ashamed of it… but now I think sensitivity is a superpower…

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Since Covid, I have learned what is important to me is family and quality of life. I used to really hustle all over LA driving to 3 auditions all over town, now that Covid is over… I feel like I really changed my time management I do workouts at home, and I waste less time commuting.
