Today we’d like to introduce you to Hallie Cameron.
Hallie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I literally fell into my job. I broke my back from a bad riding accident. I’ve ridden horses competitively most of my life, and the thought that I might not be able to continue forced me to look at my life and do some soul searching. During my recovery, I discovered a passion in psychology and it all made sense. I was a theatre major at Emerson College in Boston and after moving to Los Angeles I very quickly learned that I didn’t really like the performing part; I liked figuring out what made the characters tick-their motivations, basically the psychology of characters. So with the help of lots of IcyHot patches, I went back to school to get my masters in psychology degree.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can’t say starting out was smooth sailing. I had two young children at home and my husband was working out of town for 6 months, plus I was in physical discomfort and I hadn’t been in school or written a paper in a longtime. It was rough at times but I had wonderful support from my family and friends (and a wee bit of Scotch) and somehow, I made it through.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I mainly work with individuals and couples. I love my work and love working with my clients. People typically seek therapy when they’re struggling, when they feel lost, sad or anxious. It’s an honor to be trusted and invited into one’s world when they are feeling the most vulnerable.
I work with people struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, low self-esteem or just feeling shitty. I feel we pathologize “life” too often. Life is hard and we’re all doing the best we can. Just because one’s struggling, doesn’t mean something is “wrong” with you. Most of the time it means what you’ve been doing is no longer serving you, and it’s time to step back and try something else.
I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most important ingredient in positive change. I’m most proud of my working relationship with my clients. Every therapist has their own working style. I am an active participant; my style is not to just sit and nod. I will challenge and tell my clients my observations, but I never stand in judgement. I am always an ally.
I guess one thing that sets me apart is I do a lot of FaceTime or Skype type sessions for clients when they’re out of town or can’t brave LA traffic. Oh, and you can also bring your dog.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I feel successful when my family is happy and I have the courage to keep getting back in the saddle (literally and figuratively) regardless of the outcome.
Professionally, I feel successful when my clients feel personal growth, learn some new tools and no longer need me. It’s the goal but It’s bittersweet to say goodbye.
