Hidden Gems: Meet Corbin O’Reilly of Corbin’s Q Bar & BBQ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corbin O’Reilly. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Corbin O’Reilly is the proud owner of the barbecue restaurant ‘Corbin’s Q’. Opened in November of 2017, Corbin’s Q has grown to be a favorite within the San Diego community. A physical restaurant location and a large community of support did not come easy though. Corbin’s story and his barbecue journey begin in San Luis Obispo California. Sometimes known as California’s Cattle Country, Corbin grew up on a registered Angus Cattle Ranch! Living on the ranch, his family cared for around 80 head of cattle! From the young age of seven to nineteen years of age, Corbin enjoyed showing his cattle through his local 4-H at the County Fair, where he won a few championships! With his unique upbringing on a cattle ranch, Corbin picked up some useful skills like welding but also a love for barbecue. In San Luis Obispo County residents don’t mess around with their barbecue. This competitive environment curated the barbecue style known as ‘Santa Maria-style Barbecue’.

In this style, meat is seasoned simply with salt, pepper, and garlic and is slow-roasted over Red Oak wood. Corbin fell in love with the Santa Maria taste and wanted to bring this wonderful barbecue flavor to new people and make his unique mark in the barbecue world. To do this Corbin moved to San Diego CA. At the age of 23, Corbin launched his own barbecue venture called ‘Corbin’s Q’ at the La Jolla Farmer’s Market. With a taste so good, Corbin began to make a name for himself in the local region. Quickly, Corbin outgrew his one barbecue pit business. To increase his barbecue pit fleet, he welded his barbecue pits. He also began to expand into catering to people’s private events!

After four years of Corbin’s Q without a home, Corbin moved into a permanent restaurant location in November of 2017. Along the way, Corbin also launched another business called ‘Tap Truck’ with his long-time friend Taylor Steers in 2016. Tap truck specializes in building out American Classic vehicles and installing beer systems and taps on the trucks. This fleet then goes to events and provides people with a unique and special mobile bar experience.

In November 2022 Corbin’Q celebrated nine amazing years in business! The city of San Diego even named November 16th Corbin’s Q day! Looking ahead for Corbin’s Q there is some more exciting news. This year we were able to secure our liquor license. This allows us to open up our full bar within the restaurant and serve all of your favorite cocktails and have even more fun at Corbins Q. This is great news because Corbin’s Q is no longer just an amazing barbecue spot, but a place where the community can hang out, grab a drink, and have a fun time! This past decade has been fantastic and we are excited to grow even further in the future!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Throughout my entire business journey, I have always tried to pave a smooth road for myself, but I can’t say everything has been a perfectly smooth path. As with anything in life, there are bends and curves along the road. As I look back on my business journey, I can remember many of the learning curves that I went through and the struggles that I faced. In the early years of Corbin’s Q, I can look back on some of the longest days of my life. I was on my own trying to find success and it was incredibly stressful when things didn’t go my way. I look back on some of the times that I pushed myself a little too hard and discovered my work limits. Or when we began expanding, I got to learn the fun process of becoming a manager and all the struggles of the hiring process.

Another struggle along the road was learning to trust myself on decisions. When you’re growing and managing a business, there are a lot of people that tell you what you should do. I had to learn to stick with my gut and do what I felt would succeed and what was right. All of these examples were bumps on the road that I had to work past. In the end, I was able to overcome these experiences and get to where I am today!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
With all of my businesses, one thing is always consistent, growth. The restaurant has gone through so many wonderful upgrades and changes to better serve the wonderful people in the local community. Currently, there is a big development in the restaurant. In 2022 Corbin’s Q received a long-awaited liquor license! With this, we are now developing a full bar in the restaurant! If you are looking for an exciting night out, a place to watch the big game, or an exciting space to reserve for an event, look no further than our new bar at Corbin’s Q! Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Networking and connecting with people is such an important aspect of life and business. So many opportunities to grow and learn come from connecting with people around you. Here is some advice I would like to give to people. Firstly, be proactive in your networking and search for a mentor. You need to find people you want to be, and don’t let them come to you, but reach out and talk to them. A lot of times people think networking is something that just happens, but in reality, it is something you need to take the first step towards. Another thing would be to connect with people you enjoy talking with. The whole process of networking and finding a mentor is simplified when you actually enjoy the conversations you are taking part in. Third, try to build meaningful relationships with the people you meet. Networking doesn’t just mean collecting business cards – it means connecting with like-minded individuals and cultivating mutually beneficial relationships over time. Lastly, when it comes to finding a mentor, have a good attitude. People notice when you have the willingness to learn and understand their craft. More than likely they will be happy to give you some advice or help in any way they can.
