Rising Stars: Meet Trevor Shin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Shin.

Hi Trevor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started drawing like every kid does, the only thing that distinguishes me from most others is that I never stopped. I continued not stopping through school and bounced around several majors at a state college in Texas before finally getting my degree in Printmaking. After living and working in Dallas, I noticed I really was drawn to the artists and work coming out of LA and felt my work at the time was suited for the west coast.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been about as smooth as most of the highways in LA. Enough to question whether you’re having car troubles or it’s just the potholes. I am very thankful though. My biggest hurdle since college has been juggling working full-time while devoting myself wholly to my artistic practices. I’ve worked a non-art job most of my adult life so I could support myself without having to compromise on commissions that didn’t align with my vision. I’ve only recently been able to devote all of my time to art! It’s been a slow but rewarding process.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m an artist and Illustrator. I’m probably known for my intuitive style of working in pen and ink. I have a very jazz-like approach to mark-making that leans toward improvisation and embracing mistakes. I work in two very unforgiving mediums, pen/ink and watercolor.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk taking is essential for growth in my opinion. Not to suggest reckless abandon but your dreams aren’t going to fall into your lap. At some point, you’re going to have to make that leap of faith.
