Life & Work with Chris Koutures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Koutures.

Hi Chris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I would not be where I am today without the support, faith, and contributions of my family, colleagues, and those patients and their families who have placed trust in my work. I chose pediatrics and sports medicine to connect with young people and be able to share in their journeys.

I am continually energized by sharing in the accomplishments and challenges of raising children and being part of the team behind so many families, teams, and organizations. Many of my most unique opportunities (working as a USA Volleyball Team Physician including service at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, serving as a specialist physician for CS Fullerton and Chapman University Dance) are the result of mentors who illuminated the path and served as outstanding role models.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth – some of the biggest potholes have turned out to be the best learning experiences. From “not living up to my own expectations” to challenges of a pandemic, there has not been a consistent GPS to outline the road of our journey. However, learning to be flexible, putting trust in others, and keeping up faith have all been guideposts to overcome financial, spiritual, and intellectual challenges that come with practicing medicine and running a practice of medicine.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are specialists in pediatric and sports medicine where we strive to partner with patients and families to give individualized and comprehensive care. I’m most proud of being part of a team – from amazing colleagues and staff in our office to other professionals who I can call/text/email and readily collaborate. We are a smaller office where “everyone knows your name (and your family)”. I think we are known for that personalized approach – the concept of shared decision-making is a cornerstone of our practice with a focus on both the small but important details and the overall big picture in helping make good decisions for the long-term health of our patients. We value opportunities to teach and learn – in the exam room, on our blog or with our social media connections. Whether you are a first-time parent, a first-time stepping on a high school campus, or a first-time Olympian (have even walked in opening ceremonies with several of them), we are your choice for both pediatric and sports medicine concerns.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Being persistent – never giving up after failure (we are all going to make mistakes), never hesitating to lean on others and seek counsel and wisdom, and never stopping the learning process.
