Meet Tamari Zeigler of FAB Hair International

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamari Zeigler.

Hi Tamari, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I opened FAB Hair International Salon in Inglewood, CA in 2019 where I specialize in healthy hair care services for people with curly and coily textured hair. I have been a hairstylist for almost 20 years but my passion for hair started as a child when I would get my hair done in the salon and then go home to duplicate what I saw on my dolls. While servicing my salon clients, I discovered that so many of them were tired of potentially harmful ingredients and complicated hair care routines that they experienced with many of the hair care products they were using at home. This lead me to create FAB Hair International hair care, my own brand of natural, hand-made products for people with curls, coils and locs.

Unfortunately, during the 2020 pandemic, I temporarily had to close my salon doors. But what seemed like a setback soon became an opportunity, as I used my time away from behind the chair to improve and expand FAB Hair International products. I started off taking orders via text messages and making deliveries to my clients who needed simple and effective healthy hair care products at home. As the brand became more popular I launched the FAB Hair International e-commerce site making my hair care products available nationwide.

FAB Hair International currently offers a full line of natural hair care products for curly and coiled hair textures that simplifies the natural hair care routine with our 4-Step Wash Day Routine. Products range from a sulfate-free, growth-stimulating shampoo to moisturizing conditioners to curl-defining gels and more. As an added value for FAB Hair International’s social media followers, I also started doing live Q & A videos, sharing hair care tips and tricks, which isn’t something I see from many of the naturally curly hair brands. This was a great way for me to connect with my customers that may not come to the salon and it created a chance for me to talk about my passion for hair even when I couldn’t offer services in person.

I have since reopened my salon while balancing the demands of running FAB Hair International products. I really look forward to what’s in store for my brand as we continue to grow and flourish.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Owning a small business is never a smooth road. FAB Hair International products are the result of being able to pivot during the pandemic which affected everyone. I had just opened my salon less than a year before the temporary shutdown and could’ve lost everything. While watching a mini-series about hair care mogul Madam C.J. Walker, I got inspired to put my energy behind improving and expanding my hair care products. Although this wasn’t part of my original plan when starting my business, it was one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Since reopening my salon, I’ve had to learn how to manage to each of branches of my business which requires a lot of time and effort. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you can’t do everything on your own and you can achieve more when you have a team. I started hiring a small team to help with the things I don’t always have the time or the expertise to do well and it has helped me be more successful in running both my salon and product businesses. This also has helped me get back some time to do things I enjoy on a personal level which is important so that I don’t go into burnout, especially during busy seasons for my business.

How do you think about luck?
I don’t think luck really has anything to do with achieving success. I think everyone experiences ups and downs, which some may call good or bad luck, but I believe the most important part is how you respond to the highs and lows of life. What makes someone successful is if they can stick through the hard times to make it back to the good times. As a society sometimes it seems like we don’t want anyone to see our lows, which are an important part of the journey to appreciating our wins, even the small ones. Setbacks and failures don’t have to be bad, even if they feel like it in the moment, they can be a great way to learn and apply those lessons to your next opportunity so you can make it even further. That’s really what it is to be an entrepreneur.
