Conversations with Melissa Vogel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Vogel.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a mother of three, a certified personal trainer, a certified group fitness instructor, host of The Bomb Mom podcast, motivational speaker, author, and the creator of the program Busy To Bomb Fit Mom. Fitness, health and wellness have always been a part of my life from a very young age. Both of my parents were active and involved in martial arts so it was always around and something I saw a lot.

When I was in high school, I started working in a local gym after I saw an ad posted for free membership for cleaning the equipment. That laid the groundwork for my health and fitness journey. Soon after, I started teaching classes and fell in love with the process of helping others transform their life. I’ve been doing personal training all across the country and have a love for martial arts like my father. I’m a 2nd-degree black belt in taekwondo and a white belt in jiu-jitsu.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The main lesson I’ve learned is that you can’t take your health and fitness for granted. For me, getting back in shape after each child has been a true struggle. People look at me and think that it must be nice to be naturally skinny. I’m not. They have no idea how much I’ve had to work, push, and train literally every single day to achieve the body I have. I also work extremely hard to maintain a positive and hopeful mindset while still having balance in my life with kids, job, and fitness. But none of it is easy.

When you were 20, it WAS easy to eat whatever you want, party and work out sometimes–most people don’t have to pay too much attention at that age. Then it catches up to you. Your figure and metabolism start to change or you have a child and your body is altered in ways that will never go back to “normal”.

The biggest struggle for most moms is that you have to find a NEW WAY to be a NEW YOU after stepping into motherhood. And to make it worse, no one gives us a heads-up that it would be that way. At least no one warned me. No one told me that I would have to change how I work out. No one told me that I was going to have to change how I eat. The real kicker is that with each child it’s different. What worked after baby 1 didn’t work after baby 2 and I had to learn a new way. Then after baby 3, I was starting over again. That’s been the biggest challenge for me: relearning myself, my body, and my identity. As far as whether my journey has been easy or smooth, I can definitely tell you it hasn’t been easy but I wouldn’t change anything for the world. All of the challenges and struggles created who I am now.

The struggles along the way and all the years of failing and learning, retrying and screwing up, the pressures of being a mom and juggling work, life, a marriage (at that time in my life). All of those struggles are what created my business, Busy To Bomb Fit Mom. They helped me create this incredible program that helps women redefine themselves as a mother, rediscover their body, and release the inner beast inside of them that they don’t even know exists! I love when women tell me they didn’t think they could be more fit and healthy at 33 than they were at 23, and here we are! Through my life experiences, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t and they’ve all helped me become the teacher, coach, and leader that I am today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I created Busy To Bomb Fit Mom where I teach, coach, and train women to reclaim their identity and their body after they have children. Reclaiming your identity is both mental and physical. And this program isn’t a band-aid. It’s not a quick fix. It’s not a 6-week program. I work with women for a minimum of nine months because life never stops.

Think about it, you’re a mom and you have Christmas and Spring Break and sick kids, and your fridge goes out on Thanksgiving (just happened to me!), and your car needs new tires…all of these stressful events and expenses will pop up. We teach women how to work, train, and eat through the madness. We teach women to keep showing up for themselves when life throws them curveballs because that’s life. This is the main reason so many people start and stop their fitness journey. Life gets in the way causing moms to gain weight, then lose, but gain it right back again once the season changes.

It’s a rollercoaster and my goal is to teach women how to level out the rollercoaster. I want women and mothers to know how to have a smoother journey without the peaks and valleys but with some confidence and knowledge to level out. The journey is never perfectly smooth or a straight line, but my goal is to help make the journey a little smoother.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Spending quality time with my children and my family they are my happiness because they are my greatest accomplishment. In that same breath, my happiness is also my alone time. I know, that sounds like the complete opposite of what I just said. First of all, the time with my children is irreplaceable and I can’t ever get that back, but spending time being alone and focusing my time on me brings me true joy. I love going to the gym and blocking out the world and doing things that are just focused on me. The gym is only for me, no one else. I know moms have a hard time doing that and again, that’s why I love teaching women in my program how to find happiness by working on themselves. Honestly, taking the time to recharge or reset so I don’t get frazzled makes my time with my kids even better and I appreciate it that much more.
