Check Out Angelica Miller’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Miller.

Hi Angelica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a licensed midwife as well as a baby boutique owner! My midwifery journey has been long- ish? I just mean that I started undergrad with different plans but by the time I finished I knew midwifery was what was next for me. I had wanted to do nursing initially but it felt wrong, it felt like working in the hospital would dim my light. That I wouldn’t be able to execute change the way I wanted. I knew that I needed a career that sparked joy and served purpose. When I chose this path, I felt the attainable changes were near. Maybe not large scale change but the small groundwork changes. Knowing that birthing people would get respectable care, they would be safe and supported in their journey, they would be able to make informed choices, that their care would be evidence-based, that clients would lead to life-long connections being made. It’s been an honor to be on this midwifery journey and being welcomed into so many families most special moments.

I also mentioned that I owned a baby boutique. My online shop is basically my baby birthed out of my midwifery journey. I hope to tell ya a bit more about it but you can find it on IG @rowanandcompany.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Coming into my midwifery journey wasn’t overtly hard but it wasn’t smooth sailing either. I think the hardest part were the people being negative about my career choice. The amount of people who said I was crazy and that midwifery was old fashioned and that this career would be short-lived – etc. I think that on the days when I would lose sleep for school or miss out on special events for friends and family, I’d let the negative opinions of others creep in as self-doubt.

But I really knew I needed to shut those down and keep it pushing because midwifery was what I was supposed to be doing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a midwife! I specialize in normal, low-risk pregnancy and reproductive care! I can talk for ages about midwifery and well person care but fun maybe a less-known fact about what I do outside of midwifery is my baby shop!

I mentioned it earlier and I would love to tell you how this store was born.

In midwifery school, so many instructors expressed to me that midwifery was unattainable long term. That eventually burnout will happen and other negative things. I haven’t gotten there and don’t forsee it happening. I think my instructors instilled in me boundaries and balance. For me, the balance looked like this store, the way to offset income in slow months, In times where I may need extended time off of providing birth services.

Who better to design baby products than your local trusted midwife. All of our products are designed by me, the fabric is all the most stretchy and soft. All teething items are safety tested and free of icky chemicals!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love Long Beach and its walkability. I love to get outside and get moving! The weather here is easy breezy and the coffee shops are endless, what more could I ask for?

As for the dislikes, I really think it’s making friends as an adult. When you move to a new city during a pandemic and don’t know anyone except your partner that’s hard.

Overall, I’m happy the world is opening up and I’m excited to get plugged into my new neighborhood!
