Daily Inspiration: Meet Traci Carr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Traci Carr.

Hi Traci, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m an activist, actor, creator, producer and host of a show called “Super Power to the People”!

I started this journey organizing marches, rallies and being on the front lines during the George Floyd uprising, I learned and experienced so much but I never lost my Geekdom. And this influenced me to create such an educational, somewhat bleak in your face show but still try to keep the fun, grace and inclusive understanding for all.

“Super Power to the People” is currently in development for streaming.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The challenge is keeping up with what’s happening in this country, this world and trying to find the light in such darkness. The violence committed on our communities, economic hardship and failures from those in charge.. how do we keep our heads up and find ways to discuss these harsh topics in a digestible way? How do we show solidarity and care while keeping the balance of togetherness. It’s been tough but for the most part, having a little bit of optimism and staying grounded with the community has helped a lot along the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Hi! I’m an activist, show creator, and host of the show “Super Power to the People”. I’m also an athlete, coach and bassist! And of course I am a total nerd. These are all my passions I poured into creating SP2P.

“Super Power to the People” is a new and exciting talk show giving a platform to activism through a geek perspective! I really want to highlight activists of yesterday and today and how to teach, heal and creatively inspire others in their communities.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
As I’ve said before in an interview, it’s the people! The people that believe in the show and what it will bring to the masses. It’s the amount of incredible activists that support the show, expressing the knowledge and experiences, impact and theory of what we’re fighting for. The creatives that send me their work and how they can be part of this adventure. It’s been such a beautiful experience.

I recently had an event called “Wakanda Forever Together” that was the embodiment of what the show represents. It was a private screening of the new Black Panther film benefitting a community organization, presetnted by “Super Power To The People”. It was a chance to really build on the philosophy of the show, to get activists who create a culture of a better world mixed with heavy hitters in Hollywood that use their platform to spread that culture, these themes and messages through storytelling. We always need to be connected with the people for this work. I haven’t seen an accurate representation of the activist community I’ve been a part of in movies or T.V. By making these connections, Hollywood can see a new way of people supporting people during these times.

However, I definitely need to highlight “Andor”. Disney’s Andor captured so many ideals, classic Star Wars, I would love to do an episode on such a series.

Original quote:
The people. One of my favorite quotes is from Audre Lorde, a self-described Black lesbian, mother, warrior, and poet. “I see protest as a genuine means of encouraging someone to feel the inconsistencies, the horror, of the lives we are living. Social protest is to say that we do not have to live this way. If we feel deeply, as we encourage ourselves and others to feel deeply, we will, within that feeling, once we recognize we can feel deeply, we can love deeply, we can feel joy, then we will demand that all parts of our lives produce that kind of joy. And when they do not, we will ask, “Why don’t they?” And it is the asking that will lead us inevitably toward change.”

The driving force behind the show is the love and strength of the community – the people. As mentioned before, you can see the fire in the belly of people who want substantial change. Seeing through so much bullshit. And as I view this work, it’s all about perspective and how many different areas people are willing to work and put themselves out there. One large pie, and however you slice it, you have various avenues of change and progress. Folks are feeling this world change for better or worse. Those who are willing to fight- should be celebrated, nourished and cherished. This creates belonging and lasting love in the movement, as Audre said leads people to “feel deeply” about what we can imagine and embody. I’m always so incredibly inspired by marginalized groups: Black people, Brown people and the LGBTQA+ community. At the end of the day, we can’t forget that this is a fight for our survival, meaning it’s a long fight. We need to persevere, but we also need to be aware we need to rest. That’s a true sign of being in this for the long haul. For over a decade now, we’ve been captivated by the strengths of our heroes on screen and it’s about time we shed a light to those who have been heroes of yesterday and today, show up for them in this unique way to keep their work in mind of today. Let’s geek out on Audre, Marsha, bell, Fred, James.
