Meet Julianna Strickland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julianna Strickland.

Hi Julianna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In the last year, our big news is that we launched an online organizing course! It’s called Make Better Space, and we poured our hearts into it. It has seven lessons, tons of videos, shopping lists, audio meditations, journal entries, you name it. We also just moved into a much bigger office that will also double as a studio space. It’s called The Space West Adams and we will be renting it out for photo shoots, team meetings, craft classes, and local community events! We’re really excited to have a space to be creative and to share that with local artists.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The last year has definitely had its ups and downs. Creating and launching our organizing course was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Hundreds of hours of work went into it while I was also managing all of our in-person organizing at the same time. But the team really banded together, and I learned how to delegate better to make time for everything.

Another growing pain has been learning how to grow a business thoughtfully and evenly. It always feels a little bit like two steps forward, one step back. Either you have too big of a team and not enough work to keep everyone busy, or too much work and not enough people to do everything. Finding that balance and taking the right amount of work for our team size is something I’m constantly refining and getting better at.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Spring-boarding off of our last interview, we are still loving organizing for our clients, and we’ve expanded our scope and skillset since 2021. We have organized for a few big production companies in the last year, and that was a really fun challenge. For those projects, my team and I figured out how to create systems for thousands of costumes, props, and set pieces. We are always very focused on creating systems that are unique and personalized to each client, and we organize differently when it’s for a business or larger group of people than for a small family or an individual.

We also have found that we love organizing for artists and creatives. Everyone on my team is really talented and creative so it’s been super fulfilling to get to help artists carve out clear space in their homes or studios to work in. Organizing for artists is also a unique challenge – artistic people tend to hold on to too much stuff because they see the potential in every single little item they own. But then, if their space is too cluttered, they can’t access their creativity. It’s a fun and rewarding experience to help them sort through their items and their feelings about those items and clear space for new work to come through.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Space Camp would be nothing without our team of amazing people. We have a director of operations, a field manager, a social media manager, and six core organizers. It’s truly so fulfilling to watch how everyone has grown together in the past year. The team works like a well-oiled machine and makes magic in homes every single day, and that’s the biggest joy to be a part of.
