Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramoni Overton.
Hi Ramoni, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up I was always considered “overweight” for my age and I accepted this label for majority of my life. During the end of my freshman year of high school, I decided that I wanted to change the trajectory of this narrative. I was 14 years old at the time. I researched tips on weight loss, found some workout videos on YouTube, and got to work. I cut out majority of the items that I used to eat and started exercising twice a day. After about 3 months, I lost 30 pounds. After losing the weight, I realized that living a healthy lifestyle wasn’t the daunting task that I always believed it to be. It was enjoyable, it was fulfilling, and I wanted to help my community see that. By the time I was 15, I was training my high-school friends in my parent’s basement.
I maintained a healthy lifestyle until I went off to college. As sophomore year approached, I realized I gained what many refer to as the “Freshman 15” and my 2nd weight loss journey began. This time, students on my college’s campus witnessed my journey and wanted me to train them too. So there I was 19 years old training students in my college’s gym. Once my social media followers saw my client’s results, they wanted to train with me too but majority of them lived in other states. After doing some thinking, I decided to create a fitness business that offered in person training and online fitness programs. I called it Glow with R.O. Fitness.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t always been the smoothest but I’ve always managed to make it work. One recurring struggle that I faced was finding clientele. It was easy to find clientele when I lived on my college’s campus, but once I moved into an apartment off campus, that changed. I was no longer easily accessible to the students. I also went to college in Nashville, TN. Since I’m from Detroit, MI, I didn’t know many people outside of my college, which was another challenge when it came to finding clients. But as time went on, I continued marketing my business via social media, my platforms grew, and I gained so many new clients. A few months later, the pandemic hit and I was no longer able to offer in-person training. This actually made me afraid for the future of the fitness industry as a whole. But then I began offering virtual training and my business skyrocketed even in the midst of a pandemic. I still offer virtual training sessions to this day. After some time passed, I decided to move to Los Angeles and was faced with the same struggle of finding new clientele. But I did what I’ve always done, I made it work. I didn’t let the unfamiliarity of LA stop me from pursuing my passion or scaling my business. I worked hard and I now have a thriving fitness business in LA.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Glow with R.O. Fitness?
I am a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, a NASM Group Training Specialist, and most importantly, the owner of Glow with R.O. Fitness. Glow with R.O. Fitness is black woman-owned fitness company that offers in person training, virtual training, online fitness programs and shapewear. We’re known for amazing client results, taking a more positive approach at training, and spreading knowledge about the wonders of health and wellness.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I actually don’t have any in person mentors at the moment. My mentors are YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and podcasts. I have a few people in each of these spaces that I watch and listen to on a daily whether they create content about mental health, business, fitness or spirituality. When it comes to networking, majority of the connections that I’ve made came from me being out and starting a conversation. Whether I’m at a networking event, the grocery store, or the gym, I’m always connecting with others. My advice to anyone is to always put yourself out there. Speak to everyone because you never know who you’ll meet.
