Exploring Life & Business with Grace Pei of Jinza Couture Bridal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Pei.

Hi Grace, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started the Jinza couture bridal Los Angeles Boutique 10 years ago in 2002, in hopes of extending our couture bridal service from San Francisco to Southern California. It was such an amazing journey to get to know each of my clients personally and their families. I have heard so many great stories and learnt their family traditions, and heritage. We have created custom wedding dresses for thousands of clients. My most proud moments were we did two heirloom wedding dress, one is 69 years old (a grandma’s wedding dress), one is 29 years old (a mom’s wedding dress). It was such a great pleasure to be part of their life journey.

In Feb 2022, my partner and I launched our custom Asian cultural wear brand Madam Shanghai to create custom qipao and Chinese wedding dress for Asian American females. We hope to preserve our culture in the modern times with our bespoke service. Our qipaos and tea ceremony dresses are made with heavy silk and customized hand embroidery. We hope to make them be a wearable heritage and a timepiece.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a pleasant journey since I have so much support from my partners and families. I am hoping to build a brand that can last for generations, something that my kids can be proud of.

Being an entrepreneur is always challenging, you have no idea what is coming tomorrow or what you shall do tomorrow. But having a faith and believe in yourself is the key.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My favorite book is The Midnight Library, favorite movie is Schindler’s List, hobby is hand embroidery and collecting fabric. I love Asian culture, European fabric and embroidery, and hope there can be a combination of both in our design.
