Rising Stars: Meet Sebastian Beltran-Moeller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastian Beltran-Moeller. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Two Hour Shower was started in March 2017 by theatre punkers Elijah Reyes (vocals), James Fall (drums), and Sebastian Beltran-Moeller (guitar) in Pasadena and San Gabriel. They’d listen to classic tracks and live performances from Weezer, Harlem, Nirvana, and Green Day, writing songs that combined noisy distortion with spoken word lyrics ranging from love to hate. The three would put together songs and rehearse in James’ garage, eventually playing shows in Pasadena, Hollywood, Monrovia, La Puente, and the San Fernando Valley. Other members would come and go until settling on Mars Horner to play bass, from then on playing shows in Long Beach and touring the Bay Area in Oakland and San Francisco in the summer of 2019.

At the beginning of 2020, Two Hour Shower dropped their first album “Shower Thoughts” on streaming platforms, being featured on interviews and podcasts online following the release. Notable songs from this album include “Future Teacher”, “Back at the Pad”, and “Drowning”. Once COVID hit in 2020, the group was all together writing songs and eventually rehearsing much more consistently once they could do so safely. Two Hour Shower eventually began production of their upcoming second album, recording 12 tracks at the Spacemint Studio in Highland Park. Since then, the group has been spread throughout the country, getting together when all back in Los Angeles. However, the upcoming second album is finishing getting mixed and mastered and is expected to be released at the end of 2022/ very beginning of 2023. Some singles from the upcoming second album have been released on streaming platforms, including “Halloween in Manhattan”, “Constant Headache”, “Ellis’ Favorite Song”, and the most recent “Santa Stole My Wallet” in time for the holiday season.

Since 2017, the group has consistently incorporated genres including ska, punk, noise rock, jazz, and drawing inspiration from artists like Minutemen, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Sublime, Operation Ivy among many others. Two Hour Shower invites readers to check them out on social media and streaming platforms and to keep their eyes out for an upcoming album release and album release show in the Los Angeles met area – most possibly the San Gabriel Valley. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Creatively, Two Hour Shower has been an amazing and smooth operation. We all get along with one another and support each other in so many ways possible, with many of our interests, personalities, and habits aligning. However, the main struggle would have to be our schedules and actually spending enough time around one another since most of us are busy with school/ work in different parts of the country for months at a time. However, once we are all back home, we are able to make the most of the time and rehearse and perform consistently.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I think our music is perhaps best known for our live performances. What others may have in technicality; we make up with showmanship. Although we still ooze with technicality with the jazz giants James and Mars teaching us to love math rock and jazz more and more. With all 4 utilizing their theatre and performance backgrounds beyond musical numbers, a typical showerhead show will include Elijah screaming in your face and holding you in his arms while singing drowning, with Seb slicing his fingers bloody with the guitar strings – a sacrifice to the music gods and Quetzalcoatl of course. Each Two-Hour Shower performance ends with the self-titled song – concluding with a distortion and feedback-filled Shakespearean death scene of the bandmates. Skate pits and wrestling matches have also taken place within a classic Two-Hour Shower show. It really is a spiritual experience – people were even speaking in tongues at one point. All being said, Two Hour Shower plays shows to the point of bloody, sweaty exhaustion and hopes people can have one takeaway if they aren’t dragged into the pit already. Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes! We learned the values of having time to write/ create songs and lyrics, being able to record tracks individually and build them on top of one another over distance, the value of social media and live streaming shows. Also, to vote and use critical thinking when dealing with deceitful media politics.
