Today we’d like to introduce you to Santa Monica’s M Street Kitchen.
How did you end up in the restaurant business?
“I ended up in the restaurant and food business at the beginning because it was the only place I could get a job as a kid. My friends worked in restaurants and food didn’t really interest me at first. But, I always liked the chaos of the restaurant and service industry and I learned to love food through that. When I was younger I didn’t know what fine dining was. I developed a passion for food when I saw that people cared about making it.
Later on, I did a lot in fine dining for a very long time and I got burnt out in that space. For Stella Barra, I found I really loved making bread and I couldn’t think of anything more pure than pizza. When I opened it I wanted to go back to the basics of making honest food. For M Street Kitchen, I really wanted to embrace the community in Santa Monica. I love the area we’re located in and I wanted our restaurant to reflect it.”

We’d love to learn more about the struggles you’ve had along the way.
“It was not easy, of course. I think with anything you’re trying to be the best you can be at, you have to make a lot of sacrifices. Everything from not going out on the weekends with friends to not taking vacations. You have to be extremely selfish with your time. I put my time into my restaurants and developing them. I also think being a leader is really the hardest thing in this industry. No one teaches you how to big a good mentor, leader or coach. But the most rewarding part of this industry is seeing people become successful whether it’s with me or because of me or leaving the restaurant to go do better things. It makes all the challenges worth it.”

Tell us something interesting or unique about M Street Kitchen.
“We care about the food we make and the guests who eat it. How our food is made and where it’s sourced is a huge part of my restaurants. On top of that our goal is to have the best hospitality and make our restaurant feel like an extension of your home. What I also love about M Street Kitchen is that there’s always going to be a new restaurant that opens up and everybody goes to it, but we have so many regulars who come in everyday for breakfast, lunch or dinner more so than my other restaurants and that is the most incredible thing to me.”
