Check Out Jennifer Aos’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Aos.

Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have spent a lifetime creating or finding unique forms of artistic expression. As a teenager, I made one-of-a-kind jewelry and artwork and would spend hours coloring my hair in wild colors such as blue, purple, magenta, bleach blonde, black, etc. I was easily bored with the norm and always looking for alternative styles- in music, art, and design.

My first inclination was to study fine art and music- including guitar, piano, and flute. I found art to be much easier for me so I eventually veered away from music after a year of college-level music theory. My career counselor told me early on to be an interior designer, but I was unsure about this idea so decided to start with an internship at a French fabric company to test the waters. One thing led to another very quickly and I have swept away.

I soon had a decade-long career in the luxury furniture, fashion, and art industry which helped me develop a keen eye for quality, construction, and aesthetics. I eventually earned a degree in interior design and founded my business in 2004. My business grew from a referral basis from that point forward. Marketing and networking have never been my forte and new projects seem to come out of left field much to my surprise.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Much like the film, music, and art industry, it’s an unpredictable rollercoaster ride. There have been many times I doubted what I was doing and was thoroughly convinced I should quit. That’s usually when a big project comes out of nowhere and I’m off to the races again.

Sometimes I have to work 7 days a week 12 hours a day. Other times, it takes weeks to find a new project. If I do a good job, my clients are satisfied for at least 10 years and don’t need me again for a long time. Most clients don’t want to change anything or spend time and money remodeling again for as long as possible as it is quite a process.

Consequently, I need an extensive pipeline of potential clients who are savvy enough to recognize the benefits of hiring a designer and have the wherewithal to do so. The field is very competitive and it’s often more about who you know than what you can do. In addition, the pandemic brings new challenges, including supply chain issues, which substantially extend lead times on special orders and overseas purchases.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Anatomy Of Style is a California Certified Green Business and I am a LEED-accredited designer (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). I’m dedicated to sourcing sustainable, eco-friendly materials and supporting local businesses and suppliers who share these values. It’s important that the interior of a home is toxic-free and creates a healthy and harmonious environment for the client and their family.

Also, crucial that the remodeling process does not create unnecessary waste, toxic chemicals, runoff, or other hazards, which are common in the industry. Using zero VOC paint is the easiest and most affordable change anyone can implement. In addition, numerous plant-based leather alternatives and new green materials are coming on the market daily, but most people do not know they exist.

I drive an all-electric vehicle, have been vegan for 8 years, do not purchase single-use plastics, and always recycle, repurpose and reuse. I try to be a good example for others to follow.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My sister and I used to recreate various movies and plays using barbies and set designs, which we created using hand drawn backdrops and handmade crops. Our favorite was the “Wizard of Oz” which we had seen so many times and was fun to recreate.
