Rising Stars: Meet Dominic Redix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Redix.

Dominic, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My music journey began as a kid just singing along with my favorite songs. My parents put me on to a lot of music but I also remember discovering my music taste at a young age and falling in love with it early. In junior high, I sang in my school choir; our songs were wack but the singing and performing in front of people was fire. I got to tap into that energy for the first time and I enjoyed the experience. It wasn’t until I went to college that I started making music.

My boy wanted a hook on one of his songs that we were putting on his mixtape, so he called me to come to do it. I had never done anything like that and it was different than performing live, but I fell in love with it instantly. It was a real meditative experience trying to embrace the energy that the song needed. I’ve loved that feeling so much that I make it a part of my life consistently. After college, I was able to put together 2 Soundcloud mixtapes where I explored my lyrics, voice, and style for the first time.

That style has made small transformations over the past few years because of all that I have learned and I love how I am developing as an artist. I now have my art streaming and for sale on major music platforms and have a decent fan base for someone with no music budget. And over the past 2 years, I did all this while navigating through graduate school in pursuit of my teaching credential and master’s degree so I am proud of myself for not giving up on my art

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Eh, the road wasn’t the smoothest at first. At one point I was in an unsavory living situation and I had to record a few songs from my first mixtape in my car. the energy in the crib was influencing me to operate from my lower self and I didn’t want that to affect the music I was making since that had nothing to do with what I was creating artistically. So then, I tried learning how to mix a record by myself and I can’t even begin to explain the complexities that come with that. I didn’t even look up how to do it on youtube.

I just decided to wing it. So, that was rough but then I reconnected with a couple of friends from college that is musicians and produce music, and they are part of the reason I am the artist I am today. They help me actualize the artistic vision that I have in my head but also challenge me to create the best product possible in ways that I didn’t even know existed. for that, I am forever grateful

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do a lot of things lol. I am a music artist but also a yogi and physical education teacher. My musical style is usually hip hop and r&b centered but like to dabble in some rock and Latin vibes as well. I am not the best singer but I can create a vibe and energy in a song and I am very proud of that. I am also really proud of the Odyssey EP I released during the pandemic.

I was inspired by an idea during a time when inspiration was hard to come by, so the fact that I followed through and was able to create something beautiful with my friends makes me very happy and proud. I think what sets me apart from anyone else is my energy. in my music, and real life I bring an energy that is eclectic and unique to me which can be felt from a mile away. I listen to a lot of music and I can usually tell/feel when someone didn’t write something they’re performing, or worse, I can tell they wrote it but it has no depth or real meaning (just rhymes).

So I’m really happy and proud of writing and saying things that can be felt and resonated with. My vibe may not be for everyone but it’s genuine and I can live with that. I am also a middle school teacher 5 days out of the week, which gives me an immense sense of purpose and pleasure. I get to connect with kids about some of the things I love the most in life like exercise, food, and art! I teach kids physical education and do personal training with adults, mostly yoga now.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The first thing I thought of was a connection. When I can connect to The Source, my inner self, my muscles, my voice, my breath, my friends, my family, or my lover, then I feel the happiest. When you live with depression, you can feel very disconnected from others and yourself, so I truly feel happy when those connections are made and can be felt. It just puts me in a zone where I am unapologetically my best self. I can think of some external things that make me happy but they don’t resonate the same
