Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Moses.
Hi Dean, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story starts out in Dallas, TX where I grew up with my family and two brothers. I am the middle of three boys. My parents immigrated to the United States from Israel in the late 70s/early 80s. We grew up in a loving home, playing lots of sports and spending lots of time with family.
I moved out to Los Angeles seven years ago to get sober and start my journey in recovery. I went to a nonprofit center in Culver City that honed in on community, accountability, spiritual growth, and independence. The community piece was probably the most important component in my first year of sobriety. I started to work in the world of behavioral healthcare when I was around 1 year sober. I then started to do some mentoring and life coaching with clients who were getting ready to transition to their own level of independence and helped them build their lives. Around three years ago, I got together with my current partner Ryan Gartrell and we formed Spearhead Health.
Spearhead Health was born out of a desire to help families and individuals navigate the behavioral healthcare space and receive boots on the ground support and guidance in this seemingly complex and scary process. I would say that what we specialize in is matching services with needs and providing a wrap-around case management model of care. We saw that there were gaps when people transitioned out of structured care and tended to relapse or fall into old behavior patterns. Our mission and goal is to give these families the best experience possible while navigating very challenging matters. We love what we do and it is an honor and privilege to serve the broader community in this way.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
What a loaded question! 🙂
I believe that even three plus years in we have our challenges of creating new processes, managing personalities, and ultimately the management and balance of our internal team as well as families in crisis typically makes for an interesting day. No day ever feels the same. When you create a start-up in a competitive market that is essentially boot-strapped, you will naturally have challenges with growth. That being said, we are small which allows us to pivot and make decisions in real-time. We have had a lot of struggles that any small business goes through naturally, and we have had to remain solution focused and driven the last few years.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Spearhead Health is a private consulting and concierge case management company. We help individuals and families that are struggling with substance abuse, mental health disorders, maladaptive patterns, and behavioral challenges. We are a dynamic team of behavioral healthcare professionals here to guide you through all stages of the recovery process. We specialize in supporting the entire family unit along with all other key members of the individual’s life (wives, brothers, parents, attorneys, therapists, doctors, etc.) We see the family as the “client”, rather than solely the person of concern.
We are very hands-on and involved throughout all stages of the individuals’ and families’ healing process. We pride ourselves in being realistic with families rather than saying what may need to be said to continue to receive a check. In addition to that, we are proud to be a company that offers more than one path, rather than attempting to box an individual or their family into one school of thought. We believe, “There are many paths to the top of the mountain.” To be more specific about what it is that we actually do, I will provide a couple of examples.
Your brother is struggling with a heroin addiction and is potentially bi-polar. He was recently hospitalized and let out within 72 hours, back to your family’s home who is in no shape to manage their life. They don’t have the first clue what would be the next best step outside of what they’ve seen on TV or read in a book. There are thousands of programs and new “modalities” being developed as I type….Anyway, your mom now reaches out to a friend who she knows that also had a family member that had past challenges, and her friend says, you’ve got to call Spearhead Health, they helped us navigate all of these issues and they still support our family today.
Your mom now reaches out to us. From that point, we begin with consultations. We would conduct an assessment that your family would complete to the best of their ability on behalf of your brother. We would then reach out to past providers gathered from our assessment to gather more information. We would then interview the family members listed to gather more information. From there, we begin make recommendations and help facilitate the process of getting your brother and family started. It could mean someone from our team coming to the house and meeting with your family and brother to discuss what you all are willing to support and no longer support. From there, we may be connecting them with a case manager or coach from our team to work with him 1-1 while simultaneously building a team around him – this could look like going to an outpatient or inpatient program initially to getting the person a quality therapist that specializes in the issues your loved one struggles with along with a sophisticated psychiatrist and connecting with these providers on a weekly basis to make sure we are all on the same page working towards the same goals. We would like connect your family with a family coach from our team as that is typically a requirement to be under our care. There are other instances where we may be working with someone that has a severe mental health issue, they’re regularly bounced from one psychiatric hospital to another, one program to another, due to not fitting into the milieu of the particular program or the person simply wants to remain private and avoid traditional treatment. We go as far as building a program for the person from the comfort of their home; utilizing our own team members for certain aspects and bringing in other trusted professionals to support in the areas that we do not provide service.
Our healthcare system is fractured. There’s no centralized system of sharing information. People go from one center to another, one therapist to another, and in most cases, unless the patient requests them to collaborate, they’re not reaching out on their own to obtain past records. Our goal is to produce better outcomes and that is why we formed this company, to be the nucleus and advocate for families that find themselves challenged navigating the behavioral health space.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories was hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to go into overtime of a basketball game at the JCC. I remember looking back at my mom like, “did you see that!?”
We still talk about it today and argue if it was myself or my older brother that hit the shot. It was definitely me, but we shared some laughs over it. That moment stuck with me and makes me smile every time I think about it. It has led me become a basketball coach for young kids in the community and give back in that way.
