Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalia Ferrara Hendler.
Hi Natalia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Besides being a photographer, I am also a yoga practitioner and numerologist. Names and numbers fascinate me because they give deep insight into ourselves, other people and the world around us. I like to think of life as art – In my mind, everything is art if you know how to look and use your imagination. This way of thinking allows me to create my own world and to enjoy life even when things feel difficult.
I was born and raised in Johannesburg South Africa, with Italian heritage. I received my honors degree in the Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand, where I majored in script writing and television studies. My love for photography grew naturally and I began to prefer telling stories through single images. I was more interested in the feeling and poetry of capturing something that could never be repeated.
I worked in many different fields of television and film as a photographer, videographer, editor, and producer. In 2014, while working on a film in Cape Town, I created my own company called Bokeh Productions, through which I produced electronic press kits and script reports for local and international films.
My work shifted from film and television into the online marketing space of social media and website content creation for food, fashion, beauty, and travel industries.
In the name of love, I made my way to Los Angeles in June of 2021 and never went back! I married an amazing person who is my lover, bestie, and father to my two cats.
My work in Los Angeles has continued within the realms of content creation as well as artistic photography.
Together with my artist husband, Jared Hendler, we run an exciting new online business known as ‘Original Art on Things’. We merged both our art forms and creative skills to combine artwork with fashion, accessories, and home decor.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been a karmic highway, a journey of inner work and the discovery of personal and spiritual power. To progress in my life, I knew I had to shed and transform, which I did and still do, through healing and spiritual learning. With that said, the healing journey comes with its own tests and personal challenges.
The challenges I faced in my work life were finding the balance and focus between two different businesses. I was juggling being a yoga teacher and photographer, so my artistic projects took a back seat during that time.
Moving to LA opened a whole new life for me. It was however challenging to leave an entire life behind in South Africa – a family; a house; two businesses and, of course my two cats, but I was up for it. I was up for major change. Living in LA has given me the space to breathe and create, thanks to my amazing husband Jared.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make photographs. Whether it be with my DSLR or film camera, and even my mobile phone, I am always shooting the light and the shadows. I like to capture the surreal essence of mundane everyday life.
A big part of my artistic work is self-portraiture and feminine sensuality. I am very interested in the expressions of the feminine, the relationships we have with our bodies, and what that may mean metaphysically and Karmically.
I am most proud of how I have taken the knowledge I’ve gained through experiences and used that to fuel the energy behind my work.
The thing that sets me apart is my background in yoga and spiritual studies. This naturally informs my process and the work I create.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I used to play the classical guitar.
