Daily Inspiration: Meet Cathy Sharpe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Sharpe.

Hi Cathy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hygiea was founded as an homage to my younger sister-Crystal-who was lost to an unfortunate and long battle of a rare form of Malignant Melanoma. I understand that not every family has the support needed to undertake such a life-altering change. I want to be that support for families even if it’s a small capacity by way of creating a meal plan, leading breathwork and meditation sessions or just offering an ear to vent to.

My focus on grief therapy and recovery came during a long healing journey after losing my sister. While caring for my sister, my kids, the house and everything else in life that needed my attention, there was quite literally nothing left for me. My mental and emotional health was in the dumps. I was an angry version of the woman I wanted to be.

Losing my sister jolted my healing into hyperspeed. I was led to grief counseling that transitioned into health and mindset counseling after I saw a massive gap in real health care. There was so much emphasis being placed on sick care- treating only symptoms instead of focusing on health and preventative measures, true self-love was missing, and my clients had an even more massive gap in a positive mindset.

I’ve always been drawn to help, heal and make the people around me feel good by connecting and understand that thoughts and self-talk is just as important as the food we fuel our body with and how often we move our body.

I started my own practice inspiring women to live a beautifully holistic life in harmony through focusing on positive psychology that reminds people that happiness and health are more than the absence of unhappiness and disease. As a Functional Medicine Practitioner, I focus on diet, digestion & nutrition according to each individual, unique in their physical, mental & emotional characteristics, to help restore the body.

My message is that there is more to life than just surviving. There is thriving, flourishing and soaring. I know all too well how easy it is for us to put our own health (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual) on the backburner in order to focus on everyone and everything else. It’s easy. And it happens all too often.

My passion for helping women make mindset manageable, health holistic and life liberating where I empower and mentors women who want to create a different future for themselves and their families – how they can create a life on their own terms filled with passion, purpose, health, happiness and connection with ourselves, our family and passions.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest obstacles and challenges are working through my own limiting beliefs. Beliefs that we are societally and culturally programmed to believe that we can’t prioritize our own health (emotional, mental, spiritual and physical) whilst also caring for our families, building businesses, thriving careers, nurturing relationships and so on. It’s a fight some days to create space for women (especially women of older generations and different cultures) to believe that yes, we can be first! Yes, we matter, too!!

I had it all wrong for so many years. I thought being successful was working myself into the ground for my job, for my family, and for everything/one around me leaving me crumbles-if I was lucky.

It took me losing myself completely. Completely falling apart and having no other choice but to make a change before I finally did.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m often asked what my story is and how I became not just a grief counselor but a Health & Mindset counselor.

So much more love, support and energy need to be put into preventative measures a lot earlier on so people can be the best versions of themselves to be able to give the best versions of themselves to their kids, partners, friends and society – which led me down the road of positive psychology, strength-based practice, blogging, coaching and often linking arms with other health professionals who share the same vision and passion.

I do not want to sugar coat my words or only show the best bits of life… in my messages, I want to challenge my clients and their perspective on hard and unpleasant feelings of losing loved ones, the uncertainty of new beginnings, failures, disappointments, ending relationships, being stuck in a rut and feeling lost. I want to demonstrate and teach others how to approach difficult times with a holistic and mindful approach so you can learn how to get the most out of life by practicing gratitude.

I teach, coach and empower clients with life skills to lead a balanced fulfilling life and maintain their holistic health.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
It was an insane leap of faith to leave my corporate job and do something that I feel called to do. For me, when I lost my sister, I was left with this “ball” of grief- an empty space. The only thing that makes sense is to use this ball that I have for helping other caregivers struggling to take care and prioritize themselves. Otherwise, I would have lost my sister for nothing. There would be no reason that I have experienced this pain and trauma…..if I didn’t use it as a superpower, it would quite literally eat me alive with bitterness and grief. I have to believe that the universe gifted me with this experience to help other families.

I felt a pull and I jumped!!! Some days I can’t believe I jump while other days I’m in shock that it took me so long! It hasn’t been an easy road. There’s been months of late mortgage payments, months where I questioned myself if what I was doing was right. I ask for guidance from all of the holy and divine forces for guidance. It’s those moments in time that we have to trust, believe, and jump!
