Meet Joanna Chen of Oubly.com in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Chen.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We started Oubly when I was a new mom and working in the printing industry. I wanted to print personalized invitations. I searched online for high-quality invitations, but all options were very expensive. Working in a printing company, I have the ability to print my own wedding invitations, and my son’s first birthday party invitations at a lower cost. This gave us the idea to launch Oubly.com. Originally Oubly.com was catering to customers who needed personalize cards for special occasions in their lives at fair prices.

We know there are lots of online personalized cards, but our hand painted edge cards are what sets Oubly.com apart from other competitors. As time went on, customers started inquiring about uploading their own designs and custom edge colors for other products such as business cards, letterpress cards, notepads, and stationaries.

Oubly.com started with only two types of paper, a 16 point and 32 point.

Now we expanded to 16 types of paper stock and offer foil stamp, letterpress, emboss, deboss and die cut options.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has some bumps in the road, but mostly smooth. I think the most struggles we have had is when we launched new products and paper stocks. Each paper stock presented its own learning curve. For example, not all paper is suitable for letterpress. We tested several cotton paper stocks until we found the perfect fit.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Oubly.com story. Tell us more about the business.
Oubly.com specializes in hand painted edge cards. Our customers can design and upload their own cards and choose from 16 types of paper with the option to add different types of finishing such as foil stamp, letterpress, emboss, deboss and die cut.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry will be stable for the next 5-10 years.

Pricing:

  • Our 16 point matted coated paper is very economical. For full color, two-sided business cards the price starts at $35 for 50 cards.
