Today we’d like to introduce you to Allexia Barros.
Hi Allexia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started playing basketball at a young age since I could walk. My twin brother and I used to play in the living room on the little toy hoop. I’ve played with boys most of my childhood and when I got the chance to play with all girls. That’s when my love for the game grew. Playing in high school was the start of my journey. I played half JV and half Varsity as a freshman. For the next three years, I was the starting point guard. I got to play in the TD Garden and experienced something I’ve always dreamed of! Senior year of high school I signed to play for the Cape Verdean National Team and currently still playing for my country. I went to the community college of Rhode Island for two years.
Played basketball there and accomplished a lot, I hold the record for most threes in a game (11). Then I went to school in Canada for a year. It was a tough situation but it was a learning experience. After college, I continued to play for the Cape Verdean National team. Last year I signed to a semi-pro team in Boston called The New England TrailBlazers, we went undefeated in our regular season, won our division championship and went to the final four.
I also made the all-star team and won the 3point contest. I’m currently playing for the LA maples in Maine in the semi-pro league for the WABA. I’m also building my own brand called The Underdogs heavily based on women empowerment and helping the young females grow and elevate their game to the next level. I have a clothing line called LEXICON athletic wear that inspires. Clothes that you can play in and be comfortable in.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Constantly getting pushed to the side or simply just forgotten about because I am a female. Not only that but I am an African American Gay Female. It is not easy!
People constantly judging or just not giving me the respect I deserve.
Every day is an opportunity to me to get better as a person, a player and a coach.
Learning how to put myself first in life.
I’ve been through a lot and every day I continue to keep pushing. Life and basketball is not easy but I want more for myself and I can’t let anyone stop me from chasing my dreams.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My brand is heavily based on women empowerment, building a positive platform for female athletes and to give back to my community, teach the children, teens and young adults the game of basketball. I want to inspire, motivate and show the young athletes that the possibilities are endless. I want to show them that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to and do it with fearlessness, heart and dedication.
What sets me apart from others is my determination and drive for myself and others. All I want to do is help people. Being able to watch the kids grow and elevate on and off the court is an amazing feeling. I’m building relationships with the kids and their parents, building a family within my business.
I’m currently just getting started with my brand LEXICON and clothing line The Underdogs, so I’m just trying to trust the process. Staying locked in on what I have to do daily. I’m not just a basketball player anymore I’m an owner, a mentor, and a leader. Children and adults look up to me, even strangers and seeing that every day is what keeps me going.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I wouldn’t say it’s luck, I’d say it’s a learning experience whether it’s good or bad. Especially in life or business every day is different. I look at it as a little bump. In the road and I know I can get through it. I’ve been through the toughest battles on my own and I will never let that stop me.
