Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Curry.
Hi Carly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I️ grew up on my parent’s olive oil farm in Temecula. I️ was always working from planting trees at “summer camp” till I️ finally was able to do extracurricular activities at school. I️ fell in love with the arts but also discovered I️ was an adrenaline junky at a young age. Between climbing trees and eventually doing all-star cheer. I️ fell in love with movies. I️ started making small videos of my friends and practices, which eventually led me to taking film classes. I️ then pursued a career in circus arts while in middle school as well as acting. This led me down a rabbit hole of the love of all things production. From acting to stunts, to filmmaking. The next years I️ made videos for my parent’s small business and circus/theater performances I️ was a part of. Which led me to pursuing a film degree at CSUF that ultimately led me to where I️ am today pursuing my love for stunts/acting while working at Paramount in their streaming department!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh dear! Not smooth but not as hard as some people have it. I️ luckily have a very supportive family who gives nothing but the best for me pursuing the arts. However, any type of creative job is a struggle making connections, finding the “right” job to lead to the next gig, and when you love so much of every aspect of the field it leads to taking on a lot at once. It is hard for me to say no to projects/opportunities. As well as the pandemic when a lot of production stopped and I️ was in a production-based major, I️ had to get creative. Luckily I️ found a group of like-minded individuals that we made virtual short films with creatives all across the country via Zoom. Which led to winning a few small film festivals such as my horror short “girl alone” at the 2020 Oct. Frostbite indie film fest!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I️ am an actor/stuntwoman/director/streaming operator/editor. You can say I️ like every part of the film industry. However, the stunt work is what I️ am most proud of so far. Though it is still a work in progress, I️ have connected with many amazing athletes and trainers throughout Southern California. Growing up doing the circus arts, I️ always loved performing and being a bit of an adrenaline junkie! So realizing I️ could do that as a career and mix it with my love of filmmaking oh I️ was sold. I specialize in aerial (think trapeze) and partner acrobatics and high falls! A fear of heights is not something I know well. And I️ am constantly learning new disciplines such as stage fighting! I️ am most proud of my drive to achieve my dream. I️ have always gave 110% at all I️ do and that is needed in this industry. All the stereotypes of the artist lifestyle in LA is true people work multiple jobs so they can pursue their passion and I️ am lucky enough to have an amazing job a studio to help with their streaming department overnights. So I️ am a bit nocturnal, where I️ can train for stunts and film and take classes during the day times and then work in the wee hours! However, when you are aiming for a specific dream all the extra work, long days, and busy schedules are worth it!
How do you think about luck?
Oh goodness, luck and timing is everything haha! I️ am lucky on the aspect that when I️ reach out to creatives in my industry, they will actually respond with really amazing advice. As well as the luck of a recruiter reaching out to me randomly one day while I️ was at school to apply for my position at Paramount. This kinda launched me to make the big move to Los Angeles and pursue full force all of my passions as a career more than just a dream/hobby. As well as keeping such good connections with those who have gotten me to where I️ am thus far. I️ still do freelance editing work for the Temecula Olive Oil Company for events they throw. As well as working on projects at my old circus school the San Diego Circus Center which some projects are in the works currently:)
