Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Gordon.
Hi Isaac, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Thank you so much for having me. I deeply appreciate these opportunities. To answer your question, I feel as if my story is just getting started. Granted, I am in my mid-forties, but the past few years have really helped shape me into a new person both personally and professionally. I’ve been passionate about music for as long as I can remember. I was in a Hip Hop group when I was a teenager, which was also around that same time I realized I was gay. There was definitely an inner struggle but ultimately I knew I couldn’t play straight or live a lie just to fit in. So, I switched my focus to communications and put my rap career on pause. This led to me leaving Ohio to work in radio and meeting my now husband, Michael, in an AOL male4male chat room. Remember those? I met a lot of great people working in radio and TV. Those were some great years, but I just wasn’t happy. So, I ended up going back to school and interning, which led to me working in the music and entertainment industry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most difficult thing for me was coming to terms with my sexuality. Obviously, times have changed, but that was a definite struggle early on for me as it related to my passion for music and the music business. I also thought it was the end of the world when I was turned down by one of the bigger agencies for an assistant position. The interview was set up by someone who I looked up to and I felt as if I had let them down. NYC was rough at times, but it was necessary.
As you know, we’re big fans of Breakpoint Booking. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a boutique booking agency currently specializing in music and comedy. We are ranked #1 on Google for the search term “boutique booking agency” and we are pretty excited about it. I founded the company in 2018 when I decided to set out on my own as an entrepreneur. I love working with developing talent and found that being on my own was a way to work with who I wanted. We have had the honor of being the first agency to book talents such as Tank & The Bangas, Benny The Butcher, Jane Handcock, Harry Mack, and Lost Dog Street Band. We pride ourselves with finding talent that is right at that “breaking point” hence the name. In January (2022), we officially launched our comedy department representing acts with various credits from Saturday Night Live alum to CONAN and Comedy Central appearances.
We are one of the few black-owned talent agencies. We service nightclubs, amphitheaters, coffee shops, venues, live streaming, comedy clubs, PACs, colleges, fairs, casinos, weddings, and corporate or private parties and events worldwide. Our current presence stretches across Atlanta, Cleveland and Los Angeles with LA being home base, but we currently have agents located in LA, Denver, NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and New Jersey.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness is a mindset and at times, it can be a choice. I’ve seen folks who, by many standards, have had all the reasons in the world not to be happy find happiness. So, I try hard to be like them and find happiness wherever I can. As for things that make me happy… definitely steak; I love a good steakhouse. I love long walks on the beach 🙂 dogs (my dog/son Oscar), my husband, all my family back in Ohio and spread out all over America, long drives, outlet shopping, bike riding, hiking and working… Yes, my job makes me happy. I also love listening to and discovering new music. We have a partnership going on with BandLab and bReverbnation for talent discovery and we are actively looking for rising, talented musicians in all genres.
Demos can be sent directly to [email protected] and we listen to everything. Also, if you are interested in learning more about booking and the music and entertainment industries our blog has been doing really well and we’ve got a new playlist called Agent’s Corner covering various music industry topics.
