Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Montaño.
Hi Angelica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My love for singing Regional Mexican music began at a very young age. Ever since I can remember what I had always dreamt for was music. It was not until I turned 18 that I took the decision to dedicate my life to music 100%. I began to take intensive vocal training, performing at small cafes to gain performance experience, host concerts, sell paletas and pick up recycle bottles from my community neighbors to help fund my music projects. It has not been easy and it continues to be a rough journey but my love for music is what keeps me going. I enjoy bringing smiles to my audience through my art of singing to lift up their spirits and make their hearts feel warm.
During my rising career, I have been able to achieve notable accomplishments. In spite of the pandemic, I released two original songs, “Que No Daria” and “Regresa.” Que No Daria,“ the single, was pre-nominated for two Latin Grammys in the categories of Best Song of the Year and Best Regional Mexican Song. I opened for Arturo Vargas, the vocalist of the Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan and for Mariachi Sol de Mexico. As I continue my music career and journey, great new music is lined up to be released including some new English music which I am so excited about. This will be my first English EP.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been an easy journey. From the intense behind the curtain work as an artist, you have to put in from intense vocal training to having the people you most trusted and close to you to give up on your dream. Luckily I have the most supportive mother and boyfriend and team an artist could ever have. When times get tough and I want to throw in the towel they are always there to help me get back up and keep on chasing my dreams.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Regional Mexican singer-songwriter and performer. My professional career began in 2013. I am a California native with deep roots in Michoacán, Mexico. I bring a modern, artistic version of the regional Mexican tradition. I am most proud of being a first-generation college grad and to have the honor to be able to share my Mexican roots through the art of music here in the States and hopefully one day around the world, and lastly but most importantly to be able to pass down our culture and traditions to future generations.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Never give up on your dreams. If you feel it in your bones then go for it no matter if the world tells you you will never make it. Do not be afraid to take risks because those who have the courage to do so always end up far and are a big reason for change so make sure it is a positive change for the world. Last but not least always keep on learning and cultivating your art. You will never be too old to continue to grow and learn in your skill. As my idol Selena Quintanilla once said “Always believe that the impossible is possible.”
