Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandace Baldwin.
Hi Brandace, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I come from a long lineage of “AMAZING” cooks, bakers and BBQ enthusiasts. I accidentally stumbled upon grilling. One day I was challenged to not only successfully light the grill. In addition, embark on a genre I always viewed as a “Man’s sport or Hobby”, I was sadly mistaken. Initially, I started simply grilling side dishes and chicken…then ribs gradually graduating to brisket (If you’ve even grilled brisket… then you know!) The feedback and support from consumers was overwhelming and confirmation grilling was my true passion. I would find any reason to light the grill. Grilling became my happy place where I could/would retreat for peace. Soon adopting the slogan “you don’t need teeth to eat my meat”. I would cater events/parties and with my grill in tow. This became to physically demanding, resulting in the fusion of my two loves “soulfood and tamales” creating the one-of-a-kind soulful tamale.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The birth of this fusion, many were apprehensive to try. Resulting in a lack of belief in what I presented. I considered giving up, more times than I can remember. Regrettably, allowing self-doubt to invade my thoughts and drive. I originally sold my 1 pound soulful tamales for a modest $3.00, desperate to feel supported. I continued to thrive and offer my products, which are now commonly embraced and sought after. Never give up on what you believe in, there is an entire world ready to support you.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I never considered it a privilege to do what I love as work daily, I consider myself extremely blessed. I am known for my Soulful tamales, Ice Box Lemon Cheesecake/Pudding and Country Juice (Kool-Aid medley). However, I am also extremely passionate about Yoga. I am a certified mobile Yin Yoga teacher with Yogis as young as seven and as mature as 70. I am determined to adjust the narrative and ideal of your average Yoga teacher. I am intrigued with the body’s movements/abilities, self-healing and flexibility through “breath work and consistency”. I consider myself original by allowing myself to be lead, truly living in my passion (s) and constantly practicing what is nurturing to my SOUL.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I have a true appreciation for the various cultures residing within the same city. One direction you may intersect with Korea Town, another direction may intersect with more cultured foods, including: Soulful food, Jamaican food, Latin food, Peruvian food, Greek food, Indian food…Your options are unlimited! The greatest determining factor is what does your palate desire and how far do you want to commute to eat (luckily, we live in advanced times, where food delivery is often an option.)
