Conversations with Yvette Zhang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Zhang.

Hi Yvette, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I come from a background of fine art and interior design. I came to the United States in 2016 to study film. Then I graduated from double majoring in Film and Production Design from Savannah, Georgia. I started volunteering or general PAing to get into the film industry in LA. Then at some point, I realized that my 3D modeling/ rendering skill from interior designing has a great market in the Art department in film. So I part-timed working as a 3D modeling artist. This job leads me to more opportunities to bigger gigs. In the end of 2021, I am lucky enough to work Art Director. I Art directed the first two music videos of Boy With Uke, those were great experiences. Recently I worked with the same company for a commercial for a streaming service that specializes in Asian dramas.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I always think that I am lucky, that there is always someone who is willing to help and lead me to a greater phase of my career. Though I do feel that my personality might be the disadvantage. to be a filmmaker. I am a nice person but also too much of an introvert. I realized that as soon as I moved into LA and started working in film. Though I do know I would prefer people to like me because of my work instead of my jokes. But the film industry is more for people person in general. There is a long way for me to balance being myself as a comfortable introvert and being outgoing enough to have people not to hate my work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work in Art department of the film industry. My job title could be 3D rendering artist, Art Director, Production Designer or other film art related. I am an old-fashioned, well-trained, skilled artist. That is what I am most proud of. I am handy enough to carpentry, I am skilled enough to draft by hand or with a computer, and I am also creative to design. I appreciate the skills I gained from my interior design area. Not everyone in art department, not even the most PDs I have worked with have the skill to paint fine art or rendering.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions even if they are stupid. Along with that, speak out if you have an idea, especially when time is tight. You might start from a basic position, production will appreciate you being humble and enthusiastic helpful. But if you want to move up, you need to show up your ability of problem-solving.

Meanwhile, have a big open heart. Filmmaker is a profession that favors teamwork. You will be working with all different people. Being nice to others is a basic requirement not an optional bonus point. You don’t have to be mean even when you are skilled.

Do document your work— videos of your progress, before – after photos, or sketches and drafts, anything counts. You will be glad when you start building up your portfolio!
