Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruru Kuo.
Hi Ruru, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to the US about four years ago for getting my master’s degree in Computer Arts. Before I came here I was a freelance Motion graphic designer in Taiwan for about four years, I worked with music festivals and concerts for artists’ visuals and also was a VJ when I was off duty. I always have had an interest in streetwear/music/art, while getting my master I was interning at the Atlantic Record and Channel Studio, I got to know a lot of amazing people who are in the industry. After I graduate from school I got a job at The New York Times, I was a Digital Designer who focuses on motion graphics on my team. After my journey at The New York Times, I decided to switch to an e-commerce design-forward company – GOAT as a motion graphic designer, that’s the place I currently working now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely not a smooth road while getting my master’s degree and working at the same time is the most challenging thing for me. Also, I don’t know anybody here when I just move here, so I have to put myself out there, even though I’m an introvert. And of course, living in New York cost a lot of money when you need to go out and meet people.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a multi-disciplinary designer who focuses on 3D motion graphics. I’m most proud of the project I’m the lead on, “How Does It Feel To Be Asian-American Right Now?” – published on the NYT. I was really lucky to get to do the research and interview, it’s not the normal work I usually do, but I learned a lot and grow a lot as a designer. I think my ability of switching different design categories is what makes me stand out. I can do web design, editorial design and motion graphics. And I love to find a way to work with all of those together.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Genuine – Caring – Curiosity
