Hidden Gems: Meet Casey Furlong of Stanford Painting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Furlong.

Hi Casey, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Stanford Painting, Inc. was founded by my father, Jay Furlong, in 1988 in effort to provide the Bay Area with quality paint jobs and personalized customer service. I began my employment in 2019 while still finishing up my degree at Sacramento State University, taking on a remote Office Manager role. Once I graduated college, I began full-time in our Mountain View office and my role has evolved and expanded over the last few years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Within my first year of full-time employment with Stanford Painting, Inc., Covid hit. All of our operations were shut down nearly overnight and left our 30-man team with no work and no end in sight at the time. Both my father and I felt a level of responsibility to also assist our crews (many of them only Spanish-speaking) in navigating the ever-changing county and state orders along with EDD unemployment benefits. We were lucky enough to not only forego any layoffs, but every single one of our employees stayed with our company during that entire period.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Stanford Painting, Inc.?
Stanford Painting Inc.’s mission is to provide our clients with long-lasting, high-quality paint projects paired with professionalism, clear communication and attentiveness. We have seven crews that each consist of 3-4 painters with a lead foreman. Every single one of our foremen have been with our company for 15-25+ years and essentially watched me grow up which has provided a very unique dynamic.

We’re very aware that we are in our client’s homes and personal spaces so our crew members take the time to communicate with and get to know our clients on a one-to-one level. Some of our clients have even gone out of their way to make our crews lunch during the day and send some of our foremen holiday cards even after a project has wrapped up. We are so incredibly lucky to have the clients we do but also the crew members that we do.

Our retention rate is definitely something we are proud of. We still have our second-ever employee with the company and his three sons now work with us. My father and I strive to provide our painters with year-round work (which is not common in this field) and plan company barbecues every quarter to further foster that tight-knit relationship that is woven through our entire team. As I continue in my role and possibly step into my father’s shoes down the line, my goal is to continue fostering that same culture for the years to come because that relationship we have with our team members and with our clients alike is what sets us apart from the rest.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The Bay Area has been my home for 26 years and being a part of this company has provided me the opportunity to further engage with our community which has been a great privilege in and of itself. Needless to say, The Bay has changed quite a bit from what it was 20+ years ago but in ways that has brought all walks of life and backgrounds into one big melting pot.
