Meet Hillary McCrumb of Hi-C Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hillary McCrumb.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Hillary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
This is actually a fairly new journey for me… I have only been in business for two and a half years now. Up until then I was a commercial interior designer. I had always been super active and was always encouraged to become a personal trainer and help others and then, one day after I was fed up with sitting behind a computer everyday, I decided to give it a go! Coming from a family that has suffered with weight problems, helping people become healthier and happier thru exercise means a lot to me. I really am passionate about helping others and I think I have had success thus far because I have a different method of coaching and really try to help my clients in all areas of their life and support them 110% on their journey. They aren’t just my clients, they are my friends and I truly care about them!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely been a rollercoaster ride from the very beginning! Like wow, so tough!

Of course, there is always the problem of getting new clients when you are a brand new trainer with zero previous experience…although that wasn’t as big of a problem for me.

But I think even tougher than that is the transition to such drastic hour shifts- working a normal 8-5 and then going to 5-6am clients as well as 7-8pm clients and working while all your friends are no longer working was tough.

And then setting boundaries for work vs. personal time, not to mention needing so much recovery time after a few clients because it is very energy sucking training multiple people in a row. And you are not only their trainer but you usually become their counselor as well so you take on a heavy emotional load with your clients. It took a while to find my rhythm and not need a nap between every client. But I am so glad I kept pushing thru because now it doesn’t even feel like work. I love what I do!.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hi-C Fitness story. Tell us more about the business.
I offer private and small group sessions, which is fairly standard, but I create a variety of workouts, keeping it fresh and challenging and always finding ways to make games/competitions out of the workout. The small groups are great because you end up with a little fitness family and it has been so awesome to watch those new friendships blossom.

And in the gym, I really focus on my client’s weaknesses and look for different ways to improve on them. I create a program for several weeks (typically 8 weeks) to improve those weaknesses, re-evaluate my clients and update the program and goals based on what we have accomplished. Always challenging and supporting my clients thru the process.

But in addition to that, I also run beach boot camps weekly that add a whole new level to your work out with stability training as well as cardio conditioning and one more chance for my clients to get in an additional workout.

I have also started to organize and run fitness retreats- creating 3-7 day getaways to a variety of destinations with the goal of getting people out of their typical environment where excuses are cultivated and allow them to have opportunities to learn how to combat those excuses by teaching them easy at-home workouts, nutrition, meal planning, and more fun in the outdoors.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think over the next 5 to 10 years even more focus is going to shift to nutrition but also more functional training- not just looking good but feeling strong and more capable. As the baby boomers get older they are going to need more help staying physically fit.
