Life & Work with J Roy

Today we’d like to introduce you to J Roy.

Hi J Roy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started making music at 11 years old as “JoeTheRapper”. I didn’t take it seriously until I got to high school./college. Between that time, I joined the military (Navy). While juggling music, school, and military, I found myself appearing on Netflix’s Rhythm & Flow Season 1 where I was seen arguing with ChanceTheRapper over my name. I didn’t get the response I was hoping for so I rebranded under J Roy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t. Being an independent artist has its ups and downs for sure. A lot of trial and error, a lot of trust being lost, a lot of growing pains and wanting to stop. Trusting the process is something I struggled with a lot.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a songwriter for songfinch, a company that specializes in custom songs. I’ve written over 100 songs for people across the world as gifts to their lovers, relatives, etc. I’m known for storytelling and being able to create catchy melodies while being lyrical and relatable. What I’m most proud of is connecting with people outside of the US, providing personal music for their weddings/birthdays. What sets me apart from other music artists is my ambition. I don’t let anything put me down, I learn from my failures, pain, heartache and put it all in my music for you to relate too.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t really believe in luck. I feel like we’re all exactly where we meant to be.
