Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabella Sementilli.
Hi Isabella, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, it starts when I dropped out of community college to pursue a career in hair! My dad was a hairstylist and I saw how much he loved his job so I wanted to give it a shot! Turns out-I love it too! I found myself begging my friends to let me style their hair and take pictures for my portfolio and Instagram feed, but the photos weren’t just about the hair. I would make full on photoshoot productions in my house and would try everything from retro 60’s hair trendy 00’s hair, and even dressing my friend up like a bride to practice wedding styles. This is when I realized I craved more creativity, and just doing hair wasn’t going to cut it for me. I made an Instagram where I would post fashion and beauty inspo just for myself and friends to look at so we can get inspired for photoshoots! Then, I started a website and would blog weekly about pop culture moments, new and old fashion trends, moodboards, and would highlight small creators and entrepreneurs. Once I had an idea of what audience I was reaching, I decided to make a digital magazine called “Angel’s Kiss” (I was born with a birthmark on my right cheek and my family would often refer to it as an angel’s kiss!) For about a year I had consistent content and really branded myself as the go-to Instagram for creatives to get inspiration for their next project while also interviewing influencers, artists, and young entrepreneurs. I hosted my first event for Angel’s Kiss in August 2021 with performers and vendors which motivated me even more to take things further! I noticed my Instagram and TikTok rapidly growing, so that’s when I decided to make a print version of my magazine coming out in June 2022! So make sure to buy a copy! I finally created a creative outlet that make sense to me!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The hardest thing is being your own cheerleader. I am lucky enough to have the most supportive people around me, but at the end of the day, I have to like what I’m doing and cheer myself on to keep going. I remember working on my online magazine articles for about a year with 0 blog subscribers, I was convinced I just sucked at it, but I kept at it and now have a regular audience!
I struggled a lot with boundaries, and I had multiple experiences where I let too many opinions get in my head and it turned out to be something I hated. I’m still struggling with this, but I’ve learned that if it’s not a hell yes, then it’s a hell no! And not to take opinions from people that I don’t want to be.
Other challenge are basically just the hard work that no one sees. I sometimes work 10 hour days in the salon, then I come home and work on my magazine until I’m falling asleep. No one considers or thinks about the thought process and intention that goes into every post! It may look like I just threw a bunch of pretty pictures together, but in reality I spent hours curating the perfect aesthetic and captions!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hairstylist and a new magazine creator! I’ve been doing hair professionally for about two years and decided to make a digital magazine on the side for my creative bug that never goes away. My magazine, Angel’s Kiss, is a futuristic throwback! We touch on fashion, beauty and interview influencers, artists, creatives, and young entrepreneurs. We focus a lot on 90’s and early 00’s trends, street style, runway fashion, and style icons! We aren’t like every other magazine with a pretty girl on the cover, we include all body sizes, genders, and races because we believe everyone should see themselves in a magazine. We promote influencers of color, plus-size models, and sustainable shopping! We aren’t the magazine you go to for gossip about the Kardashians, we’re the magazine you got to when you need inspiration for your creative projects or expose you to smaller creators and artists that you can follow and support!
