Today we’d like to introduce you to Arthur Wu.
Arthur, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
If you told a younger me that he would be a “snot doctor” when he grew up, he probably would be slightly grossed out but also intrigued. You see, I have always suffered from sinus and nasal issues my whole life. I’ve been plagued by sinus infections and allergies as long as I can remember. I used to carry packs of tissue paper everywhere I went.
That’s why the field of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat) interested me so much in medical school. Ultimately, I decided to pursue just the treatment of the Nose within the field of Ear, Nose, and Throat, and I completed a fellowship in Rhinology – Endoscopic Sinus & Skull Base Surgery at Harvard. An LA native, I was lucky to land back home in Los Angeles where I’ve been ever since. I practice at Cedars-Sinai and Marina Del Rey Hospital where I treat adult and children with nasal and sinus issues. I also am busy with many research projects regarding chronic sinusitis, which is a common cause of chronic sinus and nasal complaints.
Has it been a smooth road?
Training to be a doctor and a surgeon in particular is never a smooth road. The medical training system at the time I trained still routinely wore down medical students and residents to the point of exhaustion, depression, and sometimes giving up. While never easy, I thankfully never had to overcome personal tragedies or the like to get to where I am today. I have a supportive family and group of friends who help me balance my life with my work.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Beverly Hills Sinus story. Tell us more about the business.
Beverly Hills Sinus is the premier sinus institute serving the greater Los Angeles area.
Myself and my partner Evan Walgama are fellowship trained in Rhinology – Sinus & Skull Base Surgery. This sets us apart from most ENT specialists, as we are two of only a few such experts in nasal and sinus disorders such as chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, loss of smell, allergies, and sinus tumors. We provide clinical excellence, state-of-the-art treatments and techniques, and outstanding customer service. While we are at the cutting edge of academic research, I am most proud of the way our physicians and staff treat our patients – with compassion and patience.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
More procedures will be done in the clinic instead of the operating room. Also, innovative drugs may be able to halt sinusitis in its tracks and either aid in postop control or help avoid surgery altogether. These medications are selective inhibitors of inflammatory pathways. Some are available today for select patients, but more are in the R&D pipeline.
