Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Killinger.
Joe, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My entire career has been in the real estate industry, I started as an Investor by partnering with several friends in buying residential properties and flipping them around Los Angeles.
We successfully flipped for a few years but I felt I wanted more so I decided to get my real estate brokerage license and quickly threw myself into learning how to be the best broker, I studied constantly and asked anyone in the industry that would listen to questions about how they achieved success.
I loved doing the deals and eventually became a partner in Commercial Brokers Int., we are a full-service brokerage that transacts around the country. We also have invested in real estate-related startups that we feel can help our industry evolve.
When I was getting started, it was difficult to find experienced Investors or Agents to speak with me about the industry as they saw me as their competition, I can tell you now there is plenty of business for everyone. It frustrated me enough that I vowed to start a business designed to help those that wanted to get started in real estate either as an agent or investors.
We first created a website where I could post information on how to find success in real estate www.joekillinger.co and then we launched a youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/JoeKillinger everything is free for everyone to share. On the channel, we interview top real estate entrepreneurs, investors, operators, and agents and they tell us their success stories and what they learned from their mistakes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I know very few people that have found their career in real estate easy to get started, it’s a great industry but if you are not sure how to get started it can be difficult. This is what I learned from my struggles.
If you want to become an agent you will need to find a great company with a solid mentoring program or classes and be aware that if you chose a large firm you do not get pigeonholed into an asset class that is struggling or put on a big team that divvies up all the commission leaving you with little money.
If you want to become an Investor find a great mentor that is doing exactly what you want to do and bring them value ie: find something they are not good at and help them become better at it or take it off their list of things to do by doing it yourself… BRING VALUE.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The company is designed to educate individuals that want to become real estate investors or agents.
My experience in the real estate industry comes from my years building 2 commercial real estate brokerage firms, 1 real estate auction company, 1 property management company, launching 1 real estate tech company, and investing in several real estate asset classes over the years.
I love speaking to people that have a real passion for a career in real estate, it’s fun to give them the path that can help them create their future. Our goal is to be the place you can go for free and learn about the real estate industry.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
These questions are always difficult for me.
You wouldn’t think that someone who is constantly in front of a camera could be but shyness is something I have always struggled with.
It’s always been stressful when I speak to people I don’t know or if I have to speak to a group, I always figured I would outgrow it but I have not licked it… YET!!
