Daily Inspiration: Meet Mattie Marie Wagner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mattie Marie Wagner.

Hi Mattie Marie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story started since I was a young girl with watercolors, painting, drawing, and enjoying the escape in the art world. I also fell in love with makeup as my grandma would take me to the mall so I could explore the cosmetics departments, not knowing that would play a huge manifesting and visual part of where I am today. When I went to college my escape was the hobby of art and then makeup became my passion working on my roommates and friends. Everyone told me I had a gift and talent as a makeup artist doing dark skin tones as I am white. Everyone’s feedback after doing their makeup (women from medium to dark skin tones) over time would be that I understood color, the art color wheel, and the under stones to do a correct skin match and that I needed to be a professional makeup artist. After all of this feedback and the love of art, I decided to further advance my career and go to school to become a professional where I attended Makeup Designory in Burbank, CA in 2010 to get trained in makeup, set etiquette, and special effects. Fast forward to today, I have traveled the world doing makeup for people, events, and charities. I have had the honor to work on celebrities, producers, directors, and non-celebrities enhancing one’s natural beauty from within and allowing their inner confidence to shine from within whether it’s a male or female I have done makeup for. Now I am grateful for my daily opportunities to be able to make a difference in people’s lives whether on set or at someone’s home by doing makeup.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The makeup industry is a very competitive and political industry where struggle always plays a part as an entrepreneur. I always believe that through struggle one builds character and when you love what you do any struggle leads to the end result of those big breakthroughs when you get the call for those long-term films or tv shows that you prayed and manifested for. Also, when you get the incredible feedback from your clients who thank you for making them feel beautiful or blogs who write up about the makeup product breakdown because they love how the celebrity looks. It all makes it worth the dedication to continue and the motivation to strive forward with gratitude.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a makeup artist who has been doing beauty makeup and special effects for 14 years. I specialize in medium to dark skin tones and I love creating characters in special effects. One thing most people would say about my work and what I am known for as a makeup artist is my SKIN work and my body product Mattie’s Magic which is an all natural body skincare moisturizer. I do makeup that enhancing one’s self by not overdoing the heavy foundation to take away from their natural beautiful skin. I LOVE to see the SKIN and PORES when my work is done so it looks beautiful and realistic.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I have been a risk taker my entire life. I have been a freelance makeup artist for 12 years without a 9-5 job to sustain my income with stability. I never know one day to the next when or how my jobs will come, but I just risk it all daily to keep faith, be persistent in my goals and network with others for freelance business, and know I will always be provided for in one way or another with my career. I took a risk by leaving a 9-5 job in retail without full clientele 12 years ago to be a freelance makeup artist have full faith and it was the best decision I ever made looking back.
