Today we’d like to introduce you to Airyen Vay.
Airyen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Airyen Vay is a r&b/ soul / pop singer/ songwriter based in Los Angeles, California.
I was born in Botosani, a small town in the north part of Romania in 1994, and I discovered my passion for music at nine years old when I started to take vocal lessons and learn piano, flute and guitar. As a child, I have been to numerous song contest and I won most of the competitions, but my dream was always to move to United States and be one of the best performers in the world. So a while ago, I was brave enough to move by myself in Los Angeles, CA, to pursue a music career. It wasn`t really easy at the beginning, but with a lot of perseverance, It worked out.
I like to sing and write music that speaks to peoples heart. What matters the most to me is to be authentic and deliver my message in a very simple but sincere way. Lately, I was writing about equality, freedom, human rights and love because I believe that these are the topics that everybody is confronting with nowadays. We are all looking for something to relate with, and we are all looking for love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, there were struggles along the way, but everything is a part of the process. Most of the people I met when I first moved here, pretty much all of them were trying to take advantage of the fact that I was new. It`s crazy how far people can go for attention! Usually, I am very polite and nice to people, I am a people pleaser and that was considered a weakness. It was frustrating at the begging, specially when you are seen as someone who is naive, but in time I learned how to make this appearance my strength. That’s when you see someone’s true intention when you act like you can be fooled, you give them power and see what they do with it. After being scammed for so many times and hearing all the lies and promise, I know now how to protect myself from that and I am very clear about what I want, what I don`t, and I know exactly who I am.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I believe that having the courage to approach subjects that might change people’s perception about life is one thing that stands out about my music. Most of the artists on my level are afraid to write about such subjects. It is pretty uncommon for someone who is not yet a major artist to take that risk, but for me it’s just about speaking my truth and express my emotions.
For example, my latest single “Breathe”, it’s pretty ambitious, from the music video to the lyrics and even the vocals. It was very risky to release a song with such title in the middle of a full pandemic. Some may understood its message wrong.
It was never about not wearing a mask, not gettin vaccinated or not taking this pandemic seriously. People that know me know how much of a maniac I was by doing everything I can to protect myself and my family from the virus. “Breathe” was used as a metaphor to keep going, even when it`s hard, take a breathe and keep going, you don`t stop.
This is the meaning of it, It is a song with a positive message, but I am encouraging people to speak up, which lately seems as something that society is punishing us for. What happened to those times when freedom of speech was cool? And do not get me wrong, I have been very vocal about supporting minorities and equal rights, this is something I will always stand up for. Also, I was born in a small town of Romania where we don’t know what racism means, so it`s not about that. I only wish we could say our opinions without being judged, scared, canceled or bullied, as long as we are not hurting anyone.
I want to be known as someone who touched people’s lifes, as someone who made this world a better place, for me this is what art is about.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe that hard work and perseverance are the two main characteristics to success. Sometimes you might seem crazy to others, but it is a fire inside you that does not let you to give up. Just keep going.
