Today we’d like to introduce you to Terzel Ron.
Hi Terzel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, I would always watch shows like E News. I grew interest in being a host on this program but had an equal interest in the names in the credits. What was an Executive Producer? What do they do? I became interested in the people that created the shows we all know and love. I wanted to do that, too.
Three days after my 16th birthday, all of my dreams for my life hit me in one fell swoop. It was very strange – I suddenly had a crystal clear vision for my life. I’m not sure where it came from, but ten years later those dreams still guide me on a daily basis.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggles in life, including being an undocumented immigrant, growing up in a 1-bedroom apartment in a family of 6, numerous incurable health conditions, and more put the battery in my back to work twice as hard as others for what I want. The road was anything but smooth. My mother and two sisters were gone for nine months. I traveled long distances to school. Money was extremely scarce. I speak about many of these struggles in my recent CNBC Make It Millennial Money video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2c7nRISKAJo.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in entertainment and music journalism, including hosting, interviewing, and writing. I’ve done this for events like Rolling Loud and the Grammys, to name a few. I also cover private listening events, album releases, and red carpets.
I also have expertise as a digital producer and have years of experience conceptualizing and executing digital initiatives. I’ve worked on every Viacom brand within the ViacomCBS umbrella besides Nickelodeon. This includes BET, MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Logo, and Paramount. I programmed hundreds of episodes for each brand. I produced thousands of images and programmed content for the BET+ app. I’ve programmed Comedy Central stand-up clips for Amazon Alexa.
I always ask for more. At Viacom, I was an early morning QA coordinator for a month from 6AM before starting my job at Viacom at 10AM. After hours, I worked with the marketing team to handle campaigns for the likes of the BET Awards, MTV VMAs, CMAs, EMAs. When not doing that, I would go to classes at BRIC TV in Brooklyn to hone my studio production experience.
I’ve been a digital producer at the Oprah Winfrey Network and a project coordinator at NBC Peacock Originals. These roles brought dozens of new opportunities to work on TV shows.
My work ethic, vision, and scars from struggle separates me from others. Many people are confused about what they want to do in their 20s, but I’ve never been. To this day, I am probably most proud of myself for getting a full academic scholarship to NYU, though I have had some enormous achievements after that. However, that was my ticket out of my environment and was confirmation that trusting in my ideas was the way to go. I will note that I still had to wait five years to see those results, but delayed gratification is kind of my forte.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The biggest thing that I learned from the Covid-19 pandemic is the necessity for numerous streams of income, maximizing your time, and the importance of investing.
