Today we’d like to introduce you to Gena Milanesi.
Hi Gena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a self-taught, multimedia artist based in Los Angeles.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a rollercoaster, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. There was one point when I could barely afford materials so I simplified my palette & went monochromatic. As your wheels are turning and instincts kick in, this approach was simultaneously cost-efficient and bold. An initial hindrance transformed into a style that inspired a series of collections to come…
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work oscillates between abstract and figurative, each complimentary of the other with feminine overtones. Since I’m very inspired by texture, the use of charcoal, graphite, house paint, acrylic, oil paint, and oil stick creates a conversation between mediums. I try to keep my work honest and authentic. If I can evoke a reaction, good or bad, then I’ve done my job.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Show up and leave your ego at the door.
