Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Lin.
Hi Kim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The story began the same as so many other stories did. At the age of 18, I moved from Shanghai- a prosperous city I’ve lived for ten years – to a river town where has glorious blooms when spring arrives. Savannah indeed reminded me of my original hometown – Taiwan – by its warm and moist air. After spending four years in art college figure out where my heart leans to, I decided to move from the very east to the very west when the chaos started in 2020. I used to have a dream of becoming an animator. However, after experiencing all the other creative paths, and by degrees, I saw a possibility of me doing design and illustration. I shifted my focus once I determined my thought. It feels like discovered a treasure when finally found your true passion. Now I started my career as an illustrator in the industry of motion media.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Struggles always happen. The most frustrating moment for me is the period of finding what I want to do, why I got the desire, and who I eventually want to be. I chose to do illustration simply because I feel the joy when extending my thoughts onto a canvas. However, I didn’t go with the idea in the beginning. Instead, other people’s opinions stopped me to do so in a reason of me believing select this path will not gain me the ability to survive in the actual life. It is always hard to rebel other’s expectations. But one day, I realized you are the only one who is responsible for yourself. We all know it takes courage to follow your heart; but why not take it when you only live once. I am gratified that I eventually decided to do something I love to. The choice gives me a chance to see how my passion splits its color to the way it wants to go.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a designer and illustrator in motion media industry. I specialize in creating storyboards, style frames, and some design assets before animating a video. I love the moment when drawing out frames to tell a story. While working, it is always a pleasure to help people visualize and enhance their ideas.
What matters most to you? Why?
The connection between human means a lot to my creative process. It affects my motives and emotion within an artwork. I believe to be an artist is also learning how to find beauty in the ordinary life. The quest to me is always relating myself to the land I’m stand on and the people I’m staying with. To me, empathy and sympathy are the keys to bring more depth and power into a piece of work.
