Rising Stars: Meet Kayla Hunt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Hunt.

Hi Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started music when I was a kid, like six years old, songwriting and singing. I still have videos of me singing in my kitchen. I’ve always loved music and I felt like It always spoke to me. From childhood, I remember doing choir in middle and high school, I would have to compete against other soloists to see who could perform their own solo in front of the audience. It was a pretty big deal because our showcase was only twice a year. I loved music so much, I taught myself how to play guitar in order to sing songs I loved that didn’t necessarily have instrumentals. I started with bands that I liked and eventually got into writing my own songs to the melodies that I created on guitar. At that point though, I still wasn’t recording and producing my own music for others to enjoy. For about six years, until 2019 I created my own music in secret, and when I was invited to the studio by a couple of people that I looked up to at the time, I found my passion. Hearing my voice on a mastered track and being able to express myself in something that actually sounded good is what sparked my love for recording. I am a creative person and being able to make music, record it, produce a music video, and perform it is something that I’ve only dreamt about and being able to do that now is just humbling and I’m just grateful that I have so much further to grow.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been blessed enough to have a pretty smooth transition into the music business. I met my engineer on my second try and he’s been with me up until recently. I think that would have to be my biggest challenge so far because I thrive on routine and comfortability so having to completely change how I’ve been able to create and having an engineer that understands me is challenging. I think that everything happens for a reason though, and the universe will allow my next engineer into my life soon. Also being a woman in the industry a lot of people either don’t take you serious or try to exploit you to get what they want, I’ve been grateful to have genuine conversations and relationships with the people that I have, but it’s always frustrating when you have to find another way around things because the people that have the keys to certain doors look more to what you have to offer not how hard you’ve worked.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am Kayla, more formally known as KRollin (Kay-Role-in), and I’m, known for being a music artist and model. I’ve been doing music for my entire life and just started dabbling into modeling my first campaign for Project Level x Forever 21 in 2019. I’m most proud of my ability to do this completely independent. I’m in the process of building my team and finding people who are as passionate about their craft as I am and I think my ability to filter out the negative and politics sets me apart from other artists. I’m more focused on the music, the craft, and the healing that comes with getting these things out into a space that feels comfortable. All of my social media and music can be found under Krollin’ or krollinmusic on each platform and all DSPS.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think everyday that each artist continues to chase their dreams is a risk. I saw this post from a friend of mine saying that each week he takes a chance and does something that makes him uncomfortable. Once I started taking those risks and realized that these things have been presented to me because I’ve earned them, I started reaping the benefits to that and it changed my perspective. I realized that taking these risks and receiving rejection is better than wishing you were confident enough to try It and even pull It off.
