Meet Mike Stowell and Sarah Cook of Old Pine in Arlita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Stowell and Sarah Cook.

Mike, Sarah – please share your story with us.

In the early 1980’s, a small furniture business was established by the Stowell family in the picturesque town of Northwich, England. The family focused on restoring and selling antique furniture and stripping and refurbishing many timeless pieces.

Within a short period of time, the business expanded to include manufacturing reclaimed pine furniture made from old timber taken from both roof joists and floors of the Lancashire Mills.

After relocating to Los Angeles more than 25 years ago, the youngest son (Mike), has continued to successfully produce reclaimed pine furniture. Although the location has changed, the initial concept remains the same.

Today the business proudly provides our many customers with wonderful and affordable pieces of custom old pine furniture that is both kind to the environment and produced solely in the USA.

Our range of pine furniture is made using reclaimed old timber aged anywhere from 20 to 100 years old. The timber is reclaimed from old buildings such as warehouses, offices, farms, barns and other abandoned structures. The wood that we use is specially selected for its wonderful color and graining. The reclaimed aged wood has many quirky imperfections such as divets, cracks, discoloration, blemishes and old nail holes which ultimately provide each finished piece of furniture with a distinct and unique look.

The wood is painstakingly de-nailed before being sawn, planed and finally fashioned into this excellent range. It is then hand-finished with either a stained or painted finish and then sealed with a natural looking top varnish.

With a conscientious mind towards our world and its future, all of our pine furniture is environmentally friendly as we continue to use old existing wood in all of our products.

Has it been a smooth road?
I has been a wonderful journey, all journeys have some ups and downs, but if you look at the downs as a challenge, then it makes it more fun, and all challenges can be overcome 🙂

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our business is focused on creating a piece of furniture from someone’s idea in their head, on top of that we create it out of reclaimed wood, so no trees are cut down to produce it. We custom make a dream piece of furniture that does not exist but in someone’s dream. We love that the feedback is overwhelming, only because people can never believe they get exactly what they asked for. We stand out from other people mainly because we produce dreams for people from one piece to entire house full, and entire shop fittings. People come back.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
This is a great city to do this, plenty of people and plenty of opportunity.
