Rising Stars: Meet Josefina Costa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josefina Costa.

Hi Josefina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a 22 year-old from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I moved to the United States seven years ago. In 2017, I started my college career at the School of Visual Arts where I graduated with a design degree in May 2021. During college, I always kept myself busy outside school with internships and several jobs. Those experiences really helped me learn what I liked, what I didn’t like and what I wanted my future job to be. Graduating during the pandemic was definitely a very challenging and nerve-racking situation to be in. I was always very determined to get a job before graduating and I set that as a goal for myself. During that time, I also wrote my 10-year plan. Putting everything on paper and manifesting your intentions is a great way to hold yourself accountable. I learned that from a wonderful teacher of mine, Debbie Millman. In February of 2021, after several interviews, I was able to land my first job at Siegel+Gale. I started at S+G in June of 2021 as an intern and in August, I was promoted to a full-time designer. Siegel+Gale has always been in my top 10 design studios and it is a dream come true for me to be part of the team. My biggest takeaway from the past seven months working at Siegel+Gale is that in order for the work to be great, the people have to be even greater. Of course, I am still learning and very new to the field but my one piece of advice is–work for people you truly like because feeling comfortable, respected, and accepted by your coworkers is the most important thing to look for.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think nothing is a smooth road, especially when we talk about the creative world where everything is subjective. I also think creative people tend to go through breakdowns here and there and it’s because we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. We know that there is no “I’m finished” within design and you need to keep pushing yourself, your work and constantly challenge everything around you. You may start doubting yourself but without doubt there is no creating. Without wonder, uncertainty, discomfort, and questions there are no answers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a graphic designer and I specialize in branding, packaging and UI/UX. I am a believer that branding is what unifies all of the design fields. In order to do that, I am a sensitive, scrupulous and self-reliant designer that uses inquisition and involvement to create humanistic brand identities. I am proud of being one of the few young Hispanic females in the design world. Having traveled the world ever since I can remember, I implement various cultures, styles, and perspectives into my work.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I watch a lot of YouTube videos about interior design, building, DIY, and vintage/antique shopping. Some channels are: Mr. Kate, Laura Melhuish-Sprague, Trent & Allie, Christine McConnell, Eamon & Bec, Rachel Metz, The Sorry Girls, and XO MaCenna. I believe it is important to have a clean, organized, and personalized space that makes you feel at ease. Your surroundings are a big influence on your mood therefore focusing on your living space is key for your wellbeing and productivity.
