Conversations with Stephany Camacho

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephany Camacho.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
Where to start, well… I was born in Medellin, Colombia where music was no stranger to me. Coming from a very musical family, I was able to practice, perform and breathe music daily. At the age of 9 I moved to Miami, Florida with my family and had to learn to adapt to new environments, as well as learn a new language. I joined music groups/bands and fine arts’ summer camps at a very early age where I was able to explore and hone my artistic skills and sound which eventually led me to Berklee College of Music. Once at Berklee, I felt that my sound was much more solidified. I believe that being exposed to a large variety of genres, music ideas and training truly helped me narrow down my sound and the kind of artist I wanted to be seen as. I identify my sound to be Latin Pop/ R&B but as I grow as an artist I am falling in love with all the new sounds and possibilities that come up every year. As of today, I have an Album called “ Feelin’ ” and a single “ Intentions “ out everywhere. I am so proud to say that my discography is out on all streaming platforms after so much hard work. In some of my music, I’ve had the opportunity to get produced by Latin Grammy-nominated & winning producers and musicians for the following songs ” No + Mentiras”, ” Hoy por ti” and ” Este Año”. When I’m not doing my own music, my experience in music goes from doing background vocals in live TV for artists such as Leslie Grace, among others to leading shows for event bands, songwriting and giving music/voice lessons. Currently, I am in the process of publishing the music video for my latest single ” Intentions” which has reportedly been added and discovered in more than 30+ playlists on Spotify.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been easy, following a music dream is a rollercoaster that you have to be prepared for. You have to be willing to take constructive criticism well and know how to handle the naysayers as well. As an independent artist, it is also a tough road because you have to find and build your team yourself and not everyone fits your work style, personality, goals etc. Another struggle I can share is getting your music heard by curators and fans who have the ability to push your music to a wider audience. It is a lot of trial and error but it definitely is a very humbling journey. Once you are able to have an established following and dedicated listening audience, it is a smoother and rewarding process to go through as a creative. Until you reach that point where your content basically pushes itself and/or your fans push it without having to ask too much for the support, the road will always be a little rocky in my opinion.

We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a singer-songwriter/entertainer in the styles of Latin Pop & R&B. I also dance and act here and there but I am mainly known and specialize in being a music artist. I am most proud of my latest release “ Intentions “ and all the hardships and people I’ve worked with that have helped me become the artist I am today. Mmm…. I guess what sets me apart is that I am an Afro-Colombiana singing in Spanglish, which essentially means I sing some verses in English and others in Spanish. When I’m not doing music, I work in digital marketing helping brands find and/or grow their brand presence/identity through social media management, ads, and graphic design. I love applying my professional expertise to my creative projects. It comes in handy to be able to do all things DIY as an independent artist.

Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
The music industry is facing a lot of changes in the near future. Starting with Tik Tok, Reels and other competitors, all the way to ending with NFTs. Streaming and music consumption overall is likely to take a much dramatic turn in the next 5 to 10 years. I believe that 15-second trends will continue to decide whether a song will top the charts worldwide or not. I see creators getting many more opportunities to monetize their content and literally anyone having the chance at 5 minutes of fame. I believe people are now much more willing to dare themselves to have fun for an audience with a possible instant reward translating into followers, views and/or opportunities. In 5-10 years this model will possibly still be trending. I think the standard for really great vocalists and great music will possibly be lower now that simple trends such as easy dancing/singing and repetitive and relatable snippets are taking the screens by storm. Moreover, I see Independent music and artists in or outside the industry continuing their battle against music labels, potentially putting an end to labels once and for all and/or finally getting labels to change their business model to a more artist-driven initiative. The struggle to make it as a professional music artist will be much tougher but will filter those who are meant for this industry and those who are not. Overall I’m rooting for music and the arts to continue to carry us, humans, through our rollercoaster of emotions and life events.
