Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Woods.
Hi Micah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when Covid shutdowns led to me losing my job in the music industry. Directionless, I fell back into bartending at a restaurant in East LA when businesses started reopening. It wasn’t long before restaurant life became overwhelming. An Instagram ad for a web design and coding bootcamp reminded me of my teenage passion for coding, so I took a few classes and worked with a few clients in my time off. The second shutdown hit, so I decided to pursue web design full-time and officially started running OK Micah.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been lucky in many ways, but not everything has been easy. Starting a business from the ground up is a lot of trial and error. I’ve failed but never given up, and I always make sure to learn from my mistakes. In my first few months, I struggled to keep a steady income stream and understand my business’s finances. It’s still tricky to maintain a healthy work-life balance when you are your boss, but the challenges are all part of the fun and joy of running your own business.
As you know, we’re big fans of OK Micah. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
OK Micah is a brand and web design studio for queer-led businesses. We push innovation with our strategic thinking and commitment to building designs that convert. Our playful but respectful attitude welcomes queer clientele in an industry that largely caters to hetero norms.
It’s our mission to create an inclusive and encouraging community. We take pride in creating top-notch digital experiences for queer businesses and creatives, and our collaborative, community-minded approach is what really sets us apart. Our business is built upon our dedication and enthusiasm for inclusive spaces.
What matters most to you? Why?
My community. Growing up queer was isolating, but I learned to celebrate my differences through the bonds I’ve made in the LGBTQIA+ community. I am so grateful for the friends I’ve made and their support. They are my family, and they mean the world to me.
