Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Hicks.
Hi Mia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been a writer in a sense. As a child, I would write poems, songs, essays, and short stories every chance I got. It was how I expressed myself, my feelings, how I shared my experiences and released my traumas. It’s safe to say that I didn’t talk much but I would fill up notebooks on top of notebooks with my own words. Over the years, I would convert back to writing whenever I needed an escape. It wasn’t until 2016 when I decided to get back into writing and begin a fictional blog named “Behind Kaylin’s Eyes.” One day I published the blog entries online and it was all she wrote literally after that. I begin to get readers from all over: Florida, Canada, and Africa. I began to build an audience for myself as a writer and thats when I decided to turn my blog into a book. In 2018 I wrote and self-published my first book “Behind Kaylin’s Eyes: HERstory Volume I.” For me, that’s where I thought it would end lol that’s it I’m an author! But with an effort to promote Behind Kaylin’s Eyes, I wrote and produced my first short film. I had no clue what I was doing!
Despite getting a degree in Mass Communications and at the time, being in grad school for Mass Media Arts & Journalism, writing, producing, and starring in my own promo video was something I’d never done before. I shot the video and to my surprise people started to ask me when the next video was coming out. From there, I became a writer, producer, and part-time actress. I kind of fell into the directing aspect of things after producing my second video, I quickly learned that I wanted to be sure my stories were being told how I saw them. I began focusing more on writing and producing movies, TV, and web series. It had become my passion to write and tell stories that were meaningful, relatable, and a reflection of our everyday lives, so I decided to start my own production company where we would specialize in just that. In March 2020 I founded HERvisions Productions LLC and I’ve been pursuing my dream ever since. To date, I have written, directed, and produced six short films, a documentary, a web series, commercials, and more. I’ve been lucky enough to have been in selected for four film festivals so far with my most recent film, “A Word”, premiering right here at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has ABSOLUTELY not been a smooth road for me. I have heard so many no’s, I’ve been discouraged, I’ve been uninspired to the point where I would check out and not write for weeks. I had moments where I would be up until 6am working on shot lists, video treatments, and finalizing call sheets and I wanted to throw my computer and quit. I always want to feel like the hard work you are putting in will someday pay off and it can get a little frustrating when it doesn’t. I’ve had to experience a lot of doors being shut, a lot of scripts being rejected, a lot of projects being left on the editing floor, and so much more. The truth is trying to establish myself as a successful writer and break into the film industry has been on of the hardest things I ever tried to do but I really feel like this is what I am supposed to be doing. This is my passion and believe in my company’s ability to bring some of the most unique stories to the TV and or the big screen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So I am a writer, producer, and film director. I specialize in creating movies, television, and web series. I do everything from creating overall concepts, writing the scripts, creating a shot list, creating video treatments, all the way down to coming on set and directing the project. I am known mainly for my storytelling and writing abilities. I love to create stories that are real, raw, symbolic, relatable, and eye-catching. I am most proud of my growth as writer and filmmaker. I sit back and watch some of my old projects or read some of my old scripts and reflect on how much I have matured in those areas. I’m also proud of myself for staying true to who I am as a creative. I want to create projects that really matter to me and that can mean something to someone else.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I have learned a lot of important lessons while trying to continue to work through the COVID-19 crisis. I was actually filming my documentary during quarantine and it was really a humbling experience. It made me be patient with everything I had going on. I got to really lock in with my work without any distractions because the world shut down. I began new projects and really got back to writing more. Quarantine for HERvisions wasn’t that bad. I got some really important things accomplished during that time.
