Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Richardson.
Lindsay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started as a professional dancer in Los Angeles, moved here in 2007 from Vermont. Fulfilled my dance dreams touring and dancing with big artists around the world and felt I was ready to start a new journey. After living in Tokyo on a dance job for five months, I was heavily inspired by the food culture and knew I wanted to open a small pop-up shop in LA that was plant-based. I wanted to create something that there was a need for in the vegan community and at the time, there weren’t many plant-based sushi options, so I decided to make my own!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, there are always obstacles and challenges that come with opening a new and or small business. A few months after I opened Plantae Bar my husband and I started trying to have a baby and got pregnant which was the biggest blessing ever but also challenging while trying to start up a brand new business. I worked on site at Smorgasburg on Sundays until I was about eight months pregnant. All of the work we do for pop-ups is so physical. Lots of heavy lifting and standing on concrete for ten plus hours, so I did my best but luckily had great employees at the time to help out when I couldn’t be there.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a plant-based sushi pop-up based on Los Angeles. We offer catering services, private events, party platters, and are available every Sunday at Smorgasburg LA located at the ROW DTLA. What sets us apart is that we use whole foods plant-based ingredients in our sushi. We don’t use any processed fish alternatives and we really believe that this sets us apart from a lot of the other businesses that are doing vegan sushi.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To always stay in your own lane. Comparison will take your focus away from the journey you’ve set out to follow.
